Valerie Van Horn Pate was a prominent figure in St. Lawrence women's athletics from 1981-85 and is one of the few athletes in Saint history to participate on four varsity intercollegiate teams in the same academic year.

A team leader and major contributor to every team she played on, she played goalie in both field hockey and lacrosse, was a defender on the women's ice hockey team and was on the swim team in 1984-85. She was all state in lacrosse in each of her four seasons, was captain as a senior and MVP in 1982 and 1985. She was a two-year captain, team MVP and named to the national All Star team as a senior in ice hockey and was captain of the field hockey team as a senior.

Named the Senior Female Athlete of the Year, she was also a Dean's List student and a cum laude graduate. She earned her master's degree in sport management at the University of Richmond. She has run in the Marine Corps Marathon and is a US Master's swimmer, earning All America honors in 1990 and 1991. She coached high school field hockey and lacrosse and was the head swim cocah and director of Youth Activities and Aquatics at the Country Club of Virginia.
