One of the all-time best hitters in the history of the St. Lawrence baseball program and a defensive standout on the Lambert Bowl, NCAA semifinalist 1982 football program, Bob Glendening was an eighth round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs and signed with the Cubs following his junior year at St. Lawrence.
A safety in football, Bob led the 1982 team in sacks with five, had three interceptions, nine pass breakups and 78 total tackles 49 of them solo. He was also an outstanding punt returner and kicked field goals and punted during his freshman year.
He ranks among the all-time St. Lawrence greats in baseball, hitting .378 with only 17 strikeouts in 235 at bats during his three-year career. He hit .388 in his freshman season, .372 as a sophomore, scoring 23 runs and driving in 34 with just four strikeouts in 86 at bats and finished his collegiate career with a .378 average in 1983 with 26 runs scored and 33 driven in, hitting seven homers, going 10 for 11 in steals and striking out only three times in 82 at bats. He signed with the Cubs and played three seasons in the minor leagues.
He was a captain of the baseball team as a junior and earned Most Valuable Player honors in addition to being named all league and to the ECAC first-team all star squad.
Following his professional baseball career, Bob spent 14 years as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot before taking a medical retirement as a major. He earned his master's degree in information systems at the Stevens Institute of Technology in 2004 and is a vice president at Goldman Sachs.
Bob is an honorary board member of the Rhema Partnership (UK) which supports three thriving charities in Southern India: The RMS Trust which provides primary healthcare and support for orphaned and disabled children; The Rhema Religious and Charitable Trust which runs a rural Christian University and church planting ministry, and The Antioch College and Seminary which equips graduates to serve communities more effectively. Bob has been to India on four occasions and will lead a team back there again with his wife in the spring.
