Alfred "Shag" Sheard

A football standout as an undergraduate at St. Lawrence, Shag Sheard went on to play professional football in Chicago and Philadelphia.

Sheard was the first SLU football player to receive national recognition as he became the first small college player to receive honorable mention on Walter Camp’s All America team in 1920.

He returned to St. Lawrence as a coach in 1938 and coached football as an assistant for several seasons and as a head coach in 1942.

In addition to coaching football, Coach Sheard helped reorganize hockey as an intercollegiate sport and spent three seasons as head coach of hockey.
