St. Lawrence University Athletics

The first sophomore in St. Lawrence history to earn a star for earning the block letter in all four areas of athletics, Joseph “Semi” Colon played football, basketball and baseball and was a standout in the shot put in track during his three year St. Lawrence career.

Only seven athletes in St. Lawrence history had earned stars for winning four letters in a year prior to 1922 and none had ever done it as a sophomore. Colon started at center for the football team, was center in basketball, a standout pitcher and center fielder in baseball and put the shot. His exploits dominated the headlines of the Hill News during his career and he as called the “best all around baseball player St. Lawrence has ever produced.”

A retired executive, Colon may be the only St. Lawrence athlete to win a medal in a track meet and pitch and hit the baseball team to victory in the same week. He also allowed only one opponent to score on him in his final ten games as a basketball center.
