The most successful team in Saint men’s hockey history, the 1987-88 men’s hockey team established a record for wins in a season with 29 and made the second NCAA championship game appearance in SLU hockey history.

The ECAC tournament champions with a 3-0 win over Clarkson, the team hosted Wisconsin in an NCAA quarterfinal series, winning the two-game total goals series 10-4 with a 7-0 win in the first game of the set. The team then beat Minnesota 3-2 in the semifinals as Hobey Baker finalist and ECAC Player of the Year Pete Lappin scored a hat trick. The Saints lost in the championship game to Lake Superior State, 4-3 in overtime.

The team produced two All Americas in Lappin and defenseman Brian McColgan and set records for most home victories with 16, most road wins with 13, most goals scored in a season with 200, most assists in a season with 317 and most points with 517.
