Considered by many as the finest basketball player in St. Lawrence history, Joe Tolhurst was a deadly outside shooter and a ferocious defensive player.

In his three varsity seasons, St. Lawrence won 32 and lost 15 with a schedule which included Syracuse, Colgate, Fordham, Niagara and Long Island University.

Tolhurst’s record of 25 points against LIU in post-season play in 1941 stood as the scoring record for more than 20 years. He made several last-second game-winning shots for Ron Burkman’s teams and was captain of both the basketball and baseball teams.

He served in World War II and was later a highly successful coach and athletic director at Hilton.
