Season Recap: Saints End 2025 on High Note, Keep Swinging Towards 2026

The St. Lawrence University football team ended its 2025 campaign at 4-6 on the season, going 3-4 in Liberty League action, finishing fifth in the conference standings.

With the addition of Hilbert to the conference slate and the Empire 8 crossover series, the Saints kicked off the season with the annual Hoffman Cup game, defeating Norwich 19-3 under the lights at Leckonby Stadium.

St. Lawrence then played their two chosen Empire 8 opponents St. John Fisher and Alfred before jumping into league action at Union on September 27. Despite the loss to the Garnet Chargers, SLU rebounded with a 45-14 win over Hilbert at home on October 4. With some hard-hitting opponents in the conference, the Saints faced a string of losses, falling to Ithaca, Hobart and RPI, but the Scarlet and Brown rebounded with back-to-back wins to close out the 2025 season. They defeated Buffalo State 24-19 on the road, before capping things off with a 37-17 senior day win over Rochester on November 15.

Throughout the season, the Saints' offense recorded 25 touchdowns, a total of 2,925 yards on the season, averaging 292.5 yards per game, which is up 877 yards from 2024. Defensively, SLU collectively recorded 693 tackles, 43 for the loss of 138 yards, and 13 sacks on the season. They added four interceptions, 17 pass breakups, eight fumble recoveries and nine forced fumbles.

Eight Saints earned All-Liberty League honors in 2025, with Ryan Donovan, Clayton Fogler, Nicholas Huhtala and Ryan Surhoff picking up Second-Team honors, while Sam Arbaugh, Aidan Hays, Will Lederman and Brennan Twombly were tabbed Honorable Mentions.

Donovan, a member of the offensive line, helped SLU log 2,925 yards on offense this season, averaging 292.5 yards per play and totaling 25 touchdowns on the season.

Fogler was crucial to the Saints on special teams, as he recorded 42 kickoffs for 2,134 yards, made 8-of-13 field goal attempts, including a career-best 49-yard field goal vs. Hilbert on October 4 and converted on 21-of-24 extra points. He earned back-to-back Special Teams Player of the Week honors to close out the 2025 season. Fogler ranked third in the league with 4.5 points per game.

Huhtala led the Saints receiving game and ranked fourth in the Liberty League with 45 catches for 567 yards and six touchdowns with a season-best 73-yard catch vs. Hilbert on October 4. He recorded a career-best 176 yards in the senior day win over Rochester on November 15.

Surhoff led the team with 76 tackles (40S, 36A) on the season, with 5.5 tackles for the loss and three sacks. He has also recorded one interception, two pass break ups, one quarterback hurry, one fumble recovery, one blocked kick, and a whopping five forced fumbles. His forced fumbles topped the Liberty League and ranked second nationally with five forced fumbles through 10 games. Aside from his first place ranking in forced fumbles, he ranked eighth in the league in tackles and 12th in sacks.

Arbaugh punted 39 times in 2025 for 1,434 yards, including three over 50-plus yards and a season-best 51-yard punt. His 36.8 yards per game ranked sixth in the conference standings.

Hays was a force on the defensive line, recording 21 tackles (5S, 16A) on the year, including one tackle for the loss.

Lederman finished the year with 134 completions for 1,858 passing yards and 11 touchdowns and also led the ground game with 503 yards and six touchdowns. His 458 yards on offense vs. the University of Rochester broke the single-game record, previously held by Tyler Grochot vs. Norwich in 2018. St. Lawrence ranked second in the league in offense and third in offensive efficiency.

Twombly ranked fourth on the Saints' squad with 53 tackles (25S, 28A). He also recorded two tackles for the loss, one interception, one breakup and a blocked kick. His 53 tackles ranked 24th in the league.

St. Lawrence also excelled in the classroom, with 27 team members earning Liberty League All-Academic honors. Five Saints have been nominated for CSC Academic All-District accolades, those awards are released in January.

The Saints will lose 23 seniors to graduation this spring, including four managers and two student assistant coaches. With a large group of returning team members, and a new recruiting class, the Scarlet and Brown will look to continue to build on their highlights from 2025, as they get ready for another year with spring ball just around the corner.
