Mary Hosking Invitational Day One Recap

The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team opened their season with seven singles and doubles pair advancing to the Semifinals at the Mary Hosking Invitational hosted by William Smith in Geneva, N.Y. on Saturday.

"I'm extremely proud of how our team competed today," assistant coach Noah Murphy "They battled hard and won a lot of matches, I am looking forward to tomorrow."

In Flight A Singles, Angelica Aksdal-Jansen opened in the Round of 16 with an 8-2 win over Natalie Haythorn. In the Quarterfinals, she took another 8-2 win, this time over Kara Kronenberg, to advance to the Semifinals tomorrow against Taylor Crain.

Molly Jespersen opened her season in the A draw with an 8-0 win over McKenna Ellis in the Round of 16, but lost a hard-fought 8-7 (8-6) decision to Haley Levine in the Quarterfinals to end her singles run.

In the B flight, sisters Yvette Karera and Ariane Karera emphatically advanced to the Semifinals to begin their St. Lawrence careers. In the Round of 16, Yvette swept her opponent Sarah Stone 8-0 to advance, then defeated Madeleine Sutro to save her place in the Semifinals against Lauren Kallas. Ariane was just as impressive taking an 8-3 opening round win over Luisa Arizpe Sierra, before advancing to the Semifinals with an 8-1 win over Mae Kellersman.

In the C flight, Meredith Macey opened her senior campaign on the right note taking an 8-4 win over Maddy Buck to advance to the Quarterfinals against Neha Dania. Macey's run ended in the Quarterfinals with an 8-3 loss.

In the D flight, Maya Stepic relinquished a single point on her way to the Semifinals. Stepic took her opening match 8-0 over Abby Finchum, then dispatched Miriana Kelly in the Quarterfinals 8-1 to set up a matchup with Sabrina Cheung in the Semifinals tomorrow. Abigail Sicuranza also took a Round of 16 win by the score of 8-2 over Devon Mills, but fell in the Quarterfinals 8-4.

At A Doubles, Jespersen and Aksdal-Jansen advanced to the Semifinals with an 8-0 win in the Round of 16 and an 8-4 win in the Quarterfinals. The duo will take on Sanjana Karnam Neha Dania. The Karera sisters also advanced to the Semifinal match winning their Round of 16 match 8-4 before taking down Lauren Kallas and Josephine Libby 8-6.

In the B flight of Doubles, Ellie Fritz and Alexandra Fuller won their opening match against Abigail Rockwood and Katie Kujawa, then in the Quarterfinals took down Anika Galkiewicz and Devon Mills to advance to the Semifinals. The pair of Elena Styliades and Macey won their opening match 8-1 over Elena DeRiso and Talia Wutz, then fell in the Quarterfinals 8-6.

The Scarlet and Brown will get back to work tomorrow on day two of the Mary Hosking Invitational.
