Season Preview: Men's Soccer Begins the 2026 Season With Weekday Fixture Versus Plattsburgh State

The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team and head coach Mike Toshack will be back on the pitch this week as the Scarlet and Brown host Plattsburgh State at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Tuesday, September 1 at 4:30 p.m. before taking to the road for a matchup against SUNY Geneseo on Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m.

"We are excited to start the new season!" said Toshack. "The team has been working very hard, and they came into preseason fit and ready to go. Everyone is looking forward to the opener on Tuesday."

Coaching alongside Toshack in his 11th season is new Assistant Coach Luke van Galen, who comes to Canton after graduating from SUNY Cortland.

Last season, the Saints finished 6-10 overall and went 4-5 in Liberty League play. The team advanced to the Liberty League playoffs, where they travelled to third-seeded Vassar in the First Round, falling 4-1.

St. Lawrence returns a swath of talent to the team in 2026, including Baker Diaz, who was named First-Team All-Liberty League a season ago. Diaz, who made the team as a center back in 2025, had one goal on the offensive end and will be looking to get more involved in the attack during his senior campaign.

Joining Diaz are fellow All-Liberty League selections Nicholas Petrone and Gustav Scheibler, who were named to the Third Team.

The senior midfielder Petrone led the Saints last season with 13 points offensively, scoring a team-best five goals and tacking on three assists. The fellow senior, Scheibler, was named to the Third Team after being a lynch pin on the Saints' backline.

All three of the latter will serve as captains for the Scarlet and Brown alongside seniors Dennis Argueta and Griffin MacGillivray.

Rounding out the senior class are goalkeeper Parker Sinclair and Eric Edmonds, while the junior class is occupied by Grant Gilmer, Kyle Reddish, and Eric Kniple. The Saints' biggest class is their sophomore group, which features Zach Amato, Cam Moyers, Sammy Bothwell, Jack Greenwood, Tomas Ronzoni, Kenneth Mejia Lopez, Neel Mitra, Henry Blaxter, Tristan Warner, and transfer forward Miles Courtney.

Amato enters his second season as the team's primary goalkeeper after starting 15 games during his first year in Canton. The netminder accumulated 1305 minutes in goal last season and posted a 6-9 record with three clean sheets, a 1.86 goals against and a .645 save percentage.

Toshack and the Saints will welcome six first-years to the fold this season along with Courtney, who transferred in from LIU at the Division I ranks. The first-year class is composed of goalkeeper, Nolan Bryant, defenders Juliano Masella, Jack Buyers, and Kyle Silverman, along with midfielders Patrick Hower, and Corentin Contrino.

Following this week's fixtures, the Saints will play SUNY Canton and SUNY Oneonta at home next week before traveling to SUNY Cortland for a midweek tilt on September 16. St. Lawrence will then host Hobart in Liberty League play on September 19 before their final non-conference game against SUNY Potsdam on the 22nd.

The second half of St. Lawrence's season will end with home games against Skidmore, Clarkson, Vassar, and RPI on Senior Day, while they will take on Bard, Ithaca, RIT, and Union on the road.
