Argueta Scores; Men's Soccer's Season Ends in First Round Loss at Vassar

Junior midfielder Dennis Argueta scored for the Saints, but two Vassar goals in each half sent the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 4-1 loss in the First Round of the Liberty League Championship on Tuesday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

St. Lawrence saw their season end at 6-10 overall, while the Brewers continue with a 10-5-3 record.

The Scarlet and Brown dominated the first 24 minutes of the contest, applying consistent pressure on the Brewers.

In the attack, the Saints produced four corner kicks and shots from Nicholas Petrone, Henry Hart, and Grant Gilmer. Jacob Raphan stopped two Petrone shots along with shots from Hart and Gilmer to keep St. Lawrence off the scoreboard.

Raphan's teammates rewarded the effort in the 25th and 29th minutes, taking a 2-0 lead in a blink. Mauricio Mejia scored the first goal for Vassar, while Jared Fiske finished off a free kick for the two-goal cushion.

The Brewers' Jackson Allen scored in the 55th minute to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead.

The Scarlet and Brown finally struck pay dirt moments later, however, when Argueta found the back of the net in the 61st minute. The play started at the foot of Ryan Campbell, who centered the ball to Hart. The senior tapped the pass to Argueta, who fired a shot into the top bin to make it 3-1.

St. Lawrence was unable to get any closer in the remaining minutes, and the game went to 4-1 in the 83rd minute when an errant clearing attempt ended in an own goal.

Vassar had the 15-10 edge in shots, and the 9-6 advantage in shots on goal, while the Saints led 5-3 in corner kicks.

Zach Amato made five saves for St. Lawrence, while Raphan came up with five for Vassar.
