The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team and head coach
Mike Toshack will be back on the field this weekend when the team hosts a pair of SUNYAC opponents at Sandy MacAllaster Field in SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Cortland, the latter of which are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
The Saints will take on the Knights on Friday, August 29, at 4:30 p.m. and then welcome the Red Dragons to Canton on Sunday, August 31, at 2 p.m.
"We are excited to get started on the 2025 season," said head coach
Mike Toshack, who is entering his 11
th year at the helm of the program. "The players have been putting in some excellent work! The team's captains
Baker Diaz,
Nicholas Petrone,
Gustav Scheibler, and
Jackson Malary, along with our other veteran players, have done a great job integrating the new players into the team."
A season ago, the Scarlet and Brown fell in their first two games of the season and proceeded to go on a 16-game unbeaten streak to end the campaign, finishing with a 9-2-7 record and a 5-0-4 conference mark.
St. Lawrence advanced to the Liberty League Championship last fall thanks to a double-overtime winner against Skidmore in the Liberty League Semifinals on Sandy MacAllaster Field. In the Championship game, hosted by Vassar, the match finished 0-0 after 90 minutes of play and overtime. The Championship was decided in penalty kicks, where the Saints fell 4-3, ending their season.
St. Lawrence will undoubtedly be making a charge for the Liberty League title again in 2025 and will be backstopped by a pair of junior captain defenders in
Baker Diaz and
Gustav Scheibler.
Diaz, who was a First-Team All-League selection, was an anchor on the back end and was able to chip in two goals and an assist on the offensive side. Scheibler, who was a Third-Team selection, was also a solid defender and chipped in three points offensively with a goal and an assist.
In the midfield, the Saints also return Second-Team All-League selection
Nicholas Petrone, who, after posting a goal and four assists last season, will help captain the team alongside Diaz, Scheibler, and Malary.
Senior
Ryan Campbell and sophomore
Grant Gilmer will be looked to for offense from the forward spot. Campbell, who was named Rookie of the Year his first year in Canton, posted two goals and an assist from the wing in 2024, while Gilmer came on strong at the end of last season with two goals and two assists.
In total, St. Lawrence returns 20 players from last season's runners-up team. Among the returners are
Griffin MacGillivray,
Ben Lee,
Ben Dietrich,
Eric Edmonds,
Aidan Fauth,
Kenny Lee,
Ravi Pavana,
Kyle Reddish,
Henry Hart,
Dennis Argueta,
Jeremy Ogango,
Evan Widrick,
Parker Sinclair, and
Eric Kniple.
Toshack and the Saints also brought in a strong Class of 2029, which includes
Zach Amato,
Cam Moyers,
Sammy Bothwell,
Jack Greenwood,
Kenneth Mejia Lopez,
Neel Mitra,
Tomas Ronzoni,
Henry Blaxter,
Verus Kibanga, and
Tristan Warner. Joining the newcomers is

Following their first two matches this weekend, the Saints will promptly play their next three matches away from Sandy MacAllaster Field against Plattsburgh, Middlebury, and SUNY Canton. A home contest against SUNY Potsdam on September 17 will give way to three more road matches against Hobart, Skidmore, and Clarkson to begin Liberty League play.
Four of the team's last six matches will be at home, taking on Bard, Ithaca, RIT, and Union, while their final two road games will be at Vassar in a Championship rematch and RPI.
