Kathleen Merchant won all three throwing events to lead the St. Lawrence University women's outdoor track and field team to a win in the three-team Ice Breaker Open on Saturday at Merrick-Pinkard Track & FIeld Complex.
Merchant's performance was highlighted by her win in the javelin; she led the field from her first throw of the day, and had a toss of 38.06 meters on her last attempt of the preliminary round. With the victory in the event assured, she uncorked a 40.30-meter throw on her final attempt, which ranks fifth on the NCAA Division III performance list.
In addition to her win in the javelin, Merchant won the shot put with a throw of 11.95 meters, good for 11th on the NCAA performance list, and the discus (35.81 meters).Â
The meet was the first for the Saints' track and field program since the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference indoor championship meet on March 6-7, 2020.
The Saints won eight of 12 events to score 93 points. Plattsburgh State was second with 68, and SUNY Potsdam was third with seven.
Alli Sibold added a win in the 1,500 (5:00.92) and, along with
Kayla Beck,
Leana Dickhens and
Alexa Smith, won the 4x400 relay.
Isabel Caprood added a meet record in her win in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 16.49 seconds.
Head Coach Kate Howard
"This was a great return to outdoor track and field competition as our first outdoor meet since 2019. The team takes great pride in hosting here at the Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex, so the excitement from the team members putting on uniforms for competition was evident. We are proud of the effort across all of the events and we are encouraged by these early-season results."
