Behind a pair of high podium finishes from
Amelia Berthold and
Madison Beaudoin, and another from their distance medley relay squad, the St. Lawrence University women's track and field team sits in fifth place following the opening day of the Liberty League indoor championships.
The Saints concluded the first day of competition at RIT's Gordon Field House with several standout performances, highlighted by second- and third-place efforts in the multi-events and distance lanes.
"We're off to a strong start with day one of the championships and we'll look to carry some nice momentum into day two," said Saints head coach
Kate Howard. "All of the events will be finals tomorrow and we look forward to having many more Saints on the podium."
Amelia Berthold led the way for the Scarlet and Brown, securing a second-place finish in the pentathlon with a total of 3,080 points. Berthold's path to the podium was bolstered by two individual event wins within the multi-competition. She tied for the top spot in the high jump and capped off her day by winning the 800-meter run.
On the track,
Madison Beaudoin earned a bronze medal in the mile run. Beaudoin clocked a personal-record time of 5:06.43 to take third place, picking up valuable team points in the first-year's first appearance in the postseason.
It was the Saints' A team of
Ellie Riley,
Maya Dixon,
Mia Astrauskas, and
Paige Poirier who registered a time of 13:55.36 in the DMR to place sixth in that event, in a team dominated by underclass student-athletes.
In the short sprints,
Ella Baker went sub-eight again in the 60-meter dash prelims. Baker finished second in her heat and fourth overall with a time of 7.91 seconds. The performance earned her a "big Q" (automatic qualification) for tomorrow's event final, as she aims for a spot on the podium and team points for SLU.
The team remains at RIT to wrap up leagues all day Saturday.
