First-year sprinter
Ian Clough wrapped up an outstanding indoor track and field season for St. Lawrence on Friday afternoon, finishing 14th in the 60-meter dash trials at the NCAA Division III championships at Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Clough, who set the school record in the event with a time of 6.92 seconds last week at the All-Atlantic Regional championships to qualify for the national championship, finished in 6.99 seconds in the semifinal round. The winner in each heat, plus the next six fastest times qualified for the final. The final qualifier for tomorrow's final finished in 6.90 seconds.
Clough was one of just two rookies to qualify for NCAAs in the event.
"Overall I think it was a pretty good race," said Clough. "Unfortunately I tripped a little bit on my second step and after that I couldn't close the gap. But I was still pretty happy with the overall performance and this was quite the experience. I can't wait for next year."
"Ian had a spectacular season, especially for a first-year," said head coach
John Newman '94. "We are proud of all his accomplishments and the contributions he made to the team this year. He's raised the bar for our program in the sprints almost overnight. Breaking the school record several times and being our first short sprint qualifier for indoor NCAAs in 30 years is quite remarkable."
