Ian Clough set a school record in the 60-meter dash at the Middlebury Invitational on Saturday afternoon, winning the race in 6.97 seconds to lead the St. Lawrence University men's indoor track and field team to a third-place finish at the 10-team invitational
Clough was the fastest runner in the preliminary round, finishing in 7.09, then won the final in convincing fashion, with his nearest competitor 0.18 seconds behind him. The school record was previously 7.03 seconds and was set by Jarell Roberts on February 21, 2009. Clough's time is currently tied for 11th on the NCAA Division III performance list.
Clough added a fifth-place finish in the 200 for the Saints.
Gordon White won the long jump with a leap of 6.79 meters, beating the field by 43 centimeters. The distance medley relay of Atticus King, Ronald Kipkoech, Robert Mackenzie and Brandon Moran was also victorious for the Saints, posting a time of 11:03.38.
The Saints totaled 104 points, just two points behind Williams, which finished second. Middlebury won the meet with 175 points.
Quotes from Head Coach Newman
"That was an impressive run by Ian in the 60-meter final. Our school records are quite strong and to have a first-year substantially break one indicates the caliber of sprinter he is. We are very excited for what we will see from him in the coming weeks. I'm also very impressed with Gordon as he's been very consistent this season. This was his fourth consecutive win in the long jump and his sprinting is also really coming into form."
"We chipped away at most every event to score some meaningful team points. Finishing just out of second place in the team standings shows a big turn around from where we were two weeks ago at Middlebury at a smaller meet. I'm encouraged by the progress that we've made since returning from the holiday break."
"Now we can get back into our home facility on Monday after a long hiatus while the Newell Field House was being resurfaced. The team has handled this situation very well and we are anxious to get on the new track."
