The men's novice four boat took home a first-place finish as the St. Lawrence University men's rowing team competed in the New York State Championships Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, New York. The Saints fought less than ideal weather and were unable to complete all of their races.
The Saints topped the novice four category finishing the course in seven minutes and 21.9 seconds, just over two seconds ahead of second place Skidmore (7:23.181). The University of Rochester took home third place in 7:32.709, while the United States Merchant Marine Academy was fourth in 8:04.110 and Stony Brook finished fifth in 9:37.898. The novice men's four posted the fastest time out of both heats and were seeded to win the final. Skidmore and Ithaca were seeded second and third.
"It's too bad that the Novice Men couldn't race their final, it would have been nice to take home some hardware with that boat," said assistant coach
Francis Stripp.
The men's varsity eight raced to a third-place finish with a time of 6:31.678 seconds. RIT topped the race in 6:06.800, while Hamilton took home second place in 6:09.068. Binghamton University finished in fourth place with a time of 7:10.302.
The varsity eight took home sixth place in 7:02.553 behind the United States Military Academy (6:40.600), RIT (6:45.019), Hamilton (6:47.586) Ithaca (6:51.803) and the University of Rochester in fifth (6:55.986).
The men's open four finished in fourth place with a time of 7:48.601, falling behind Ithaca (7:09.970), Vassar (7:25.709) and Geneseo (7:35.009).
The Saints will travel to Union next weekend for their final races of the season.
