Elijah Wickland Shearer (pictured above) won two events and a relay, and Dylan Babcock won both throwing events to lead the St. Lawrence University men's indoor track and field team to a win in the season-opening Saints Holiday Relays meet at Newell Field House on Friday night.
St. Lawrence had 143 points in the three-team meet, while SUNY Plattsburgh was second with 93 and SUNY Potsdam was third with 20.
Wickland Shearer won the 400-meter dash in 52.90 seconds and added a win in a triple jump with a leap of 11.24 meters. He also ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay, which finished in 3:44.22, despite dropping the baton during the exchange between Wickland Shearer and Nicholas Vielhauer.
In the throwing circle, Babcock started the day with a win in the shot put, taking the lead on his second-to-last throw with a toss of 12.52 meters. He followed up that performance with a career day in the weight throw, posting a throw of 13.63 meters – just two centimeters shy of his personal best – on his first attempt. He improved by 10 centimeters on his next attempt, then hit another career-best mark in the finals with a toss of 13.92 meters on his fifth throw.
Vielhauer, Ian Clough, Travis Hamre and Gordon White all won an individual event and were part of a winning relay for St. Lawrence, which won 12 of the 15 events contested.

Quote from Head Coach John Newman '94
"Tonight's meet was a great way to start our indoor season. There were a lot of very competitive events today, so it was great to see our guys go out and win close races and edge out their competitors in the field events. It was a whole team effort, and I enjoyed watching our team not only do well, but support each other throughout the night as we opened up the 2017-18 season."
