Men’s Lacrosse Starts Liberty League Schedule with a Win

Jordan Dow, Conor Healey, Jamie DeNicola and Jamie Kuppel each scored multiple goals leading the undefeated St. Lawrence University Men's Lacrosse team to a 14-5 victory over Union College Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League matchup on Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady.

The seven wins to start the season for St. Lawrence (7-0 overall, 1-0 Liberty League), ranked #14 in the latest USILA/Nike National Poll, sets a new school record breaking the six wins at the beginning of the 2003 season.

Union (4-3, 0-1) played without the services of Head Coach Paul Wehrum who missed the game due to health reasons.

"The team and I would like to send our thoughts and support to Coach Wehrum for a quick recovery," said Head Coach Mike Mahoney.

The Saints four straight goals to start the game as Healey scored the first two goals of the game while Jon Fairbanks and Kuppel added single goals to get St. Lawrence up 4-0 early.

Union cut the lead in half with the first two goals of the second quarter before Steven Peterson and Jeremy Vautour scored giving the Saints a 6-2 advantage heading into the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, the Saints continued the run with the first four goals of the second half. DeNicola scored twice while Kuppel and Dow each scored once in the run to give St. Lawrence a 10-2 lead with 2:08 left to play in the third quarter.

Union added a goal in the final minute of the quarter to cut the lead to 10-3 and Dow opened the fourth quarter with a man-up goal to regain the eight-goal advantage.

The Dutchmen tried to start a comeback with a pair of goals within a span of 1:30 trimming the SLU lead to 11-5 but the Saints answered with the final three goals of the game as Charlie Duprey, AJ Schmidt and Andrew Jarrett each scored in the final 10 minutes for St. Lawrence.

"It was a complete effort on both sides of the ball today," said Mahoney. "It was a great way to wrap up the Spring Training trip and a great start to the Liberty League schedule."

The St. Lawrence defense was strong again forcing 19 Union turnovers and limiting the Dutchmen to one man-up goal in seven opportunities. Ryan Fisher played nearly the entire game making seven saves and running his record to 7-0.

The Saints return home for the first official home game of the season Tuesday against SUNY Geneseo with a 3 pm start. The game will be followed by a Women's game against SUNY Potsdam at 5:30 pm.
