Coach Mike Mahoney enters his 29th season as the Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach at St. Lawrence University with an overall record of 306-130. With his 306 wins, Coach Mahoney currently ranks eighth in Division III and 12th across all divisions for all-time victories amongst active coaches. In 2022, Mahoney became the all-time winningest coach in St. Lawrence Men’s Lacrosse history, having surpassed former head coach and Hall of Famer Don Leet, with 253 wins. He recorded his 300th career win against Vassar on April 5, 2025.

Coach Mahoney’s accolades include being named The F. Morris Touchstone Division III National Coach of the Year in 2016. He was also named the ECAC Metro/Upstate N.Y. Coach of the Year in 2016 and has been named Liberty League Coach of the Year seven times (1999, 2004, 2009, 2012, 2015 & 2016 & 2024). He was St. Lawrence University’s Bernie McKinnon Coach of the Year in 2003, 2008 & 2015. A native of the North Country, Coach Mahoney earned his master’s degree from the University of Albany and a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University, where he was a two-sport captain in lacrosse and football.

Under Mahoney’s leadership, the St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse program has qualified consistently for post-season play, at the conference, regional and national level. In 2001 and 2002, the Saints were ECAC Upstate Tournament Champions. The 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 teams advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning four-straight Liberty League Conference Championships. The 2016 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament semi-finals. Most recently four teams (2017, 2022, 2024, 2025) have earned their spot in the NCAA Tournament, after Top-10 finishes in the USILA National Poll including the 2024 team, which ranked fifth nationally.

Over the course of his career, Mahoney has coached 60 All-Americans, including Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Outstanding Goalie of the Year - Michael Marinello in 2025, Specialty Player of the Year - P.J. Santora in 2009 and three-time All-Americans Conor Healey ’17, Judge Murphy ’24, and Padraic Condon '25. He has also coached five Liberty League Players of the Year, one Defensive Player of the Year, and four Rookies of the Year.

The Director of the Saints Lacrosse Camp held at St. Lawrence University, Mahoney coached in the North-South Game in 2000, was the former chair of the ECAC Upstate Tournament committee and has also served as a regional advisor to the NCAA Tournament selection committee, is a past member of the USILA Coaches Poll committee and is a current member of the USILA/Nike National All-America Committee.

Mahoney also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations, as well as, the Assistant Academic Coordinator for the athletic department. He also teaches classes in both the Sport Studies and Exercise Science Minor and the Graduate Program for Leadership at St. Lawrence.

Coach Mahoney and his wife Pam ’92 have three sons, Mark ’22, John ’24 and Daniel ’27, who have all competed for the Saints Lacrosse program.
