The St. Lawrence women's tennis team is 3-0 through the first three of four scheduled matches in California for Spring Break, after beating Whittier College 8-1 on Saturday and posting a pair of 5-4 wins over Chapman and Colby on Sunday.
Saturday's 8-1 win over Whittier came almost entirely forfeits from the home team, as the match consisted of only two singles matches which the Poets and Saints split with
Lia Petersen winning 6-0, 6-0 for St. Lawrence.
In the first match on Sunday against Chapman, the Saints opened up a 2-1 lead through doubles with wins from
Hallie Young and
Laramie McHugh at No. 2 (8-3) and
Alexandra Dadoly and
Emily Wyman at No. 3 (8-0).
The Saints then picked up wins in the first three singles matches at No. 5, No. 4 and No. 6; all in straight sets, to clinch the victory. Dadoly won her match over Thimanthi Withana, 6-0, 6-1 to start and
Georgia Comber (6-0, 6-0) and
Lia Petersen (6-1, 6-2) followed to help the Saints.
In the evening match against Colby, the Saints swept doubles with 8-5 wins from both Comber and
Morgan McNeal at No. 1 and McHugh and Young at No. 2, as well as an 8-3 win from Wyman and Dadoly in the three spot.
In singles, it was Young at No. 3 who posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Colby's Maddie Lupone for the Saints fourth point, before
Georgia Comber clinched the match, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory of Aleks Piibe at No. 4.
The Saints will round out their California trip on Thursday with a 9:00 a.m. (PST) match against Oberlin College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
