Season Preview: Saints Field Hockey Opens 2026 Season at Morrisville on Tuesday

The St. Lawrence University field hockey team is gearing up to open its 2026 campaign on the road at SUNY Morrisville this coming Tuesday, September 1st, under the guidance of longtime head coach Fran Grembowicz, who enters her 29th season with the Scarlet and Brown this year.

"We've had a good preseason; everyone has worked hard and came in energized," said Grembowicz. "We've gotten good input from our first-year class and great leadership from upperclassmen, and everyone is excited for our scrimmages and to start the season."

Captaining the Saints this season are seniors Lily Gubbins and Maddy Shaw, along with junior Morgan Barnard.

"Captain wise, each of them is bring a set of unique characteristics to the team and they have blended that well together. The three also bring a lot of guidance and excitement for the season, they are great role models and it's also fortunate that there is one captain in each of our lines, which provides a voice over the entire field."

Lily Gubbins is also the highest returning scorer for the Saints this season, ranking third on last years squad. SLU also returns four others that ranked in the top-10 in scoring last year including Charlotte Lehr, Shaw, Sawyer Bailey and Hannah Gubbins.

With the graduation of six seniors, including All-League nod and top scorer Caroline Hamilton and goalkeeper Elizabeth Walsh, sophomore Petra Gamage returns as the most seasoned goalkeeper and is joined in the cage by sophomore Stella Zimmer and first-year Stella Gizzi.

"We graduated six seniors last season, but we bring back a mix of experience, young talent, and new skill to the field between our upperclassmen and first-years and sophomores, which will make for a great season. We also continue to play a very strong schedule and have added a couple of new teams this season, so looking forward to the challenges that the Liberty League brings."

After opening the season at Morrisville on Tuesday, the Saints head to the Oneonta Tournament on Labor Day weekend and the William Smith Tournament the following weekend. They'll host Oswego and Hamilton at home, before jumping into league play at Skidmore on September 26.

The Saints will also host Ithaca, William Smith, Vassar and Cortland in October. They take on the Herons of William Smith on senior day, October 10, before closing out the regular season on Wednesday, October 28 vs. Cortland.
