Sawyer Bailey scored a pair of goals, while first-year
Stella Gizzi recorded her first career shutout, as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team topped St. John Fisher 3-0 on Friday afternoon at the Oneonta Tournament.
The win moved the Saints to 2-0 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 0-2.
With 9:52 to play in the third on a Saints' penalty stroke, Bailey was able to capitalize on a scramble in front of the net with a short shot from the right post for the 1-0 lead.
The Saints second goal was kickstarted with a long pass down the middle from
Charlotte Lehr, which was saved by Fisher goalkeeper Morgan Parrinello. Bailey collected the rebound and slipped a shot through Parrinello's legs to
Hannah Gubbins, who doubled up the Saints lead at 2-0.
With Parrinello out of the cage late in the fourth, Bailey scored her second of the game from the left post off a pass from Lehr to complete the 3-0 shutout effort.
"We had a really nice win against a very competitive team," said head coach
Fran Grembowicz. "I thought we did well executing the today's game plan, which is a credit to the whole team."
"Our offense worked the ball up the oved the field and around the keeper well. The midfielders and the defense were able to contain Fisher's offense and our transition game worked really well today. Gizzi had a really good game and stepped up in goal, and we're looking to continue on a really strong upward trend."
Gizzi earned her first career shutout for the Scarlet and Brown with three saves. Parrinello made six saves for the Cardinals.
The Saints outshot the Cardinals 9-7, while St. John Fisher held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
St. Lawrence will face Utica University for their second game of the Oneonta Tournament, Saturday, September 5th at 3:30 p.m.
