Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Winn Stops 37, Jurícek Finds the Net in Loss at Harvard

First-year Colin Winn made 37 saves in the net, and fellow newcomer Filip Juříček scored the lone goal for the Saints, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team ultimately fell 5-1 on Friday night at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, Mass.

St. Lawrence fell to 2-19-2 with the loss and 1-10-0 in ECAC play, while the Crimson improved to 8-7-1 and 6-4-0 in league action.

Harvard jumped out to a two-goal lead in the contest in the first 8:48 of action. The Crimson's first goal came in the opening 3:48 when Richard Gallant buried a rebound after a barrage of shots that were stopped by Winn. Mason Langenbrunner made it a 2-0 game five minutes later, wiring a shot home from the blue line.

The Scarlet and Brown answered back with a goal in the last three minutes of the opening frame. Cayden Casey caused a Harvard turnover in the St. Lawrence end and shuffled the puck to Sam LeDrew, who hit Juříček streaking up the ice. The first-year raced onto the breakaway. Where he buried a shot through the five-hole of Ben Charette to make it a 2-1 contest.

After killing off a penalty in the opening moments of the second period, St. Lawrence once again went on the kill at the 6:51 mark, and Heikki Ruohonen took advantage with a man-advantage goal to regain the two-goal lead.

The rest of the second period was marred by penalties on both sides, as eight penalties in total were assessed. Despite the special teams action, the game went into the second intermission at 3-1.

In the third period, the Saints had a pair of good opportunities to cut into the lead with three Harvard penalties.

The first man-advantage was killed by the No. 1 penalty kill unit of the Crimson, and on the second chance for St. Lawrence turned into a 5-on-3 for a little less than a minute with a third call. The chance was short-lived; however, as 12 seconds later, the Saints were given a penalty of their own. Things got worse from there as Harvard got a shorthanded goal from Matthew Morden just 22 seconds later to make the score 4-1.

St. Lawrence pulled the netminder for an extra attacker with 2:40 left in the game, but the Crimson tucked in an empty-netter to put the game further out of reach.

Winn stopped 37 shots in the contest, the second-most in his career, including 19 in the first period of the game, while Charette stopped 20 shots in the home net for the Crimson.

The Skating Saints will be back on the ice tomorrow night in Hanover, N.H., as they take on No. 10 Dartmouth in a 7 p.m. matchup.
