Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Smith Makes Career-High 34 Saves, Skating Saints Fall at No. 10 Dartmouth

Junior goaltender Cameron Smith made a career-high 34 saves for the Saints, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 4-0 on Saturday night against No. 10 Dartmouth at Thompson Arena in Hanover, N.H.

St. Lawrence fell to 2-20-2 with the loss, and 1-11-0 in ECAC action, while the Big Green improved to 14-4-1 and 8-2-1 in league play.

The top-ten-ranked Big Green wasted little time getting on the board in the contest as Hayden Stavroff got free in the Saints' end and wired a shot into the top corner at the 3:08 mark of the first.

Play leveled off after the tally, and the Scarlet and Brown went on the power play shortly after.

The man-advantage came up empty, but the Saints kept pushing and looked to have tied the game. Andrew Brown had the puck at the Dartmouth blue line and fired a shot through a Jakub Kopecky screen and in for what looked like his first career tally. However, the goal was called off for goalie interference, keeping St. Lawrence at bay.

The Saints continued to push, and Brown had another great chance for an equalizer just moments later as he drove in towards Roan Clarke, but was stopped by the netminder's pads.

At the defensive end, Cameron Smith made a highlight reel save for the Saints to keep the game at 1-0 in the latter stages of the period. His strong play continued into the last three minutes, where the Big Green went on a power play of their own, but the chance was killed as the game went into the break.

Dartmouth controlled the action in the first half of the second period, but both teams did well to limit dangerous chances. That would not last, however, as a bad bounce for the Saints ended up on the stick of Hank Cleaves, who Smith to make it a 2-0 game.

The Big Green were afforded a great chance to make it a three-goal game at the 6:17 mark of the frame as they went on a power play, which turned into a 5-on-3 for 31 seconds. Smith and the penalty kill unit killed off the two-man advantage and the subsequent power play to keep the Big Green at bay.

The momentum swung in the Saints' favor in the final two minutes as Filip Juříček was streaking for the second breakaway in as many nights, but was hauled down by a defender. The Big Green stood tall on the St. Lawrence power play, however, as the game went into the second intermission at 2-0.

The special teams chances continued into the third with the Saints going back on the man-advantage in the opening two minutes. The chance was killed off, and instead, Dartmouth was able to extend its lead with another goal from Stavroff at the 13:37 mark.

Both teams saw another set of power play chances go to waste as the game progressed into its later stages. In the final minutes, the Saints pulled their netminder and got a pair of great one-timers from Juříček that were snared by Clarke. Instead, Dartmouth buried an empty-net chance to put the game on ice.

Smith finished with 34 saves on the night, while Clarke posted 18 in the win.

Both penalty kill units were perfect in the matchup, with the Saints going 4-for-4 on the kill, and the Big Green going 5-for-5.

The Skating Saints will return home to the North Country and begin their preparations for the Route 11 Rivalry against Clarkson starting Friday at Cheel Arena, followed by a Saturday night game at Appleton Arena.
