The St. Lawrence University men's cross country team opened its season with a dominant performance at the Plattsburgh 5K, taking the top three spots Saturday morning in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Griffin Roeder led the Saints with a winning time of 15:48.4 seconds, just edging out fellow seniors
Patrick Russell and
Nick Lyndaker, who finished in 15:48.6 and 15:48.7 respectively.
"We had a nice season opener versus some familiar teams at Plattsburgh today," said Saints head coach
John Newman. "The team got a chance to practice our meet day routines and work with their training groups throughout the race. Pat, Griffin and Nick led the charge and set the tone as our front runners."
"It was great to see so many cross country PRs from a variety of team members both first-years and returners. Our sophomores
Eliot O'Mahoney,
Riley Cushman and
Cyrus Goetze seemed to make a big jump from a year ago and
Aidan Fay led all first years in the race with his 13th place finish."
O'Mahoney placed sixth overall with a time of 16:13.3, followed closely by
Henry Hagen in eighth at 16:14.1 and Cushman in ninth at 16:17.9. Goetze rounded out the top ten with a time of 16:18.6. All three recorded personal records.
Matthew Serrano finished 11th in 16:26.2, while
Aidan Fay made an impressive collegiate debut by placing 13th in 16:37.0.
Peter Stubler and
Cole Jacobsen added depth with finishes of 16:37.6 and 16:48.3, placing 14th and 16th respectively.
In total, 19 Saints competed, with 11 finishing in the top 20 and 17 breaking the 18-minute barrier.
The Saints return to the course at Hamilton College on Saturday, September 13.
