Esports Final Weekly Recap: Valorant & Rocket League Make Postseason Play

Rocket League vs. Kings College - February 23

The Saints drop the series 0-3 in tough fought matches. Kings came out efficient and took opportunities to score when they came. The Saints were not able to capitalize on many of their chances, but are able to take away a lot from these losses and bounce back in Friday's match.

Super Smash Bros. vs. Dean College - February 27

The Saints start out strong. HennyJ closes out a convincing first game but the team were then faced with a tough counter pick. The Saint put up a valiant effort against Dean but were stopped in their tracks by a good Sonic player. Round two was a closer set, but when faced again with the same Sonic player, we couldn't hold up our own. Rest be assured, the Saints will lab and practice to overcome any future Sonic players. The team is still hungry for more as we get closer to our first win of the season.

Overwatch vs. Rampado - February 29

St. Lawrence University forfeits.

Rocket League vs. Utica - March 1

The Saints faced a competitive Utica team and ended up losing 0-3 in the series. The Saints look to use this loss as a building block and look to take momentum into the next matchup.

League of Legends vs. Trent University - March 1

League of Legends came into this series looking to pick up their first big win. Both teams were tied at 0-2 for the season going into the match. The Saints rallied together and won both games in twenty-five minutes picking up their first win of the season. The team is under new captain James Fry and look forward to continuing the winning streak.

League of Legends vs. University of Southern Maine - March 3

After the previous big win the Saints look to keep the momentum going into tonight's match. University of Southern Maine comes in as the higher seed and the Saints look to create an upset. After losing map one senior Ryan Wilhelm rallies the team together and leads an impressive reverse sweep to earn the team its second big win of the season.

Valorant vs. Ontario Tech - March 4

On today's game day the VAL team faced OSTU. The first map was split, OSTU's map pick,. The enemy picked a team composition which favored slow play, one of the Saints week points as the Saints love to play aggressive. The Saints were able to maintain composure and ended the half 8-4. Erik "Zorts" Schneider had a phenomenal half ending 19-8. The Saints then had to go on the attack against the defender sided OSTU, however the saints were able to adopt with help from great pacing from their duelist BreckenRidge "tidgek" Cling taking the opponents map in dominating fashion. The second map was bind per the Saints wishes. The Saint's bind as been very strong for a long time in no small part to the team collective understanding of the map. The Saints started a bit slow on the attack side as OSTU once again had a defender sided composition ending the half with the slim lead of 7-5. However, just as the saints did on defender side on split, they rallied to punish OTSU's weak attack and only let them get one more round the entire game, ending the game with final score of 13-6. This defender sided was helped out by Sirius who got his first ever match MVP on Sentinel nevertheless as his site anchors and lurks have been critical to the team's success. The team goes against Grims on the 8th the only other undefeated team in the league and are looking to keep the snowball rolling.

Super Smash Bros. vs. Bryant University - March 5

The Saints endure another defeat this time against Bryant University. We were sadly no match for their well composed yet projectile spammy Mii Gunner player. The second set was more convincing as both schools fought for the advantage but it was their strong captain as their anchor who reassured them their win over us Saints. Shout out goes to Elwynoftime as this was their debut game of the season and they put up a valiant effort.

League of Legends vs. SUNY Potsdam March - 6

The Saints come in as the higher seed and if they are able to score a win will secure their spot in playoffs. The first match is hard fought with a lot of back and forth from both sides. Senior Ryan Wilhelm is able to successfully call the match and leads the Saints to a game one victory. The Saints adjust and draft a heavier scaling comp for game two and SUNY ends up forfeiting slightly before the twenty minute mark securing the Saints playoff position.

Overwatch vs. Purdue University - March 7

The Saints look to pick up their first win of the season. Purdue comes in as the higher seed to the match and the Saints know upsetting them will be no easy task. However, the Saints under leadership of Coach Six are able to pull off their first win of the season and secure the upset. The Saints look forward to continuing the winning streak as they look towards earning a playoff spot.

Rocket League vs. Pace University - March 8

Valorant vs. New England College - March 8

The Saints go into this match knowing that whoever wins this match will become the number one seed for the Northeast division. With such high stakes the Saints have been putting in extra work with head coach Kadin deRuijter to make a game plan. While in game, the Saints play an impressive series but in the end are unable to secure the one seed and lose 0-2.

Valorant vs. University of Ottawa - March 10

The University of Ottawa had to reschedule this match and was supposed to occur a couple weeks earlier. The Valorant team looks to bounce back with this match after a defeat to the Grims. Team captain Erik "Zorts" Schneider has a phenomenal series and is able to lead the team to a 2-1 victory.

Valorant vs. Montclair State University - March 11

Valorant looks forward to this tough matchup against Montclair State where the winner will become the number two seed within the division. The Saints try out some new comps ahead of the series to see how they can improve their in game performance. Unfortunately, the Saints are unable to capitalize with their new comps and fall 0-2 in the series.
 
Super Smash Bros. vs. Fisher College - March 12

The Saints going into this match are looking to pick up their first win of the season. However, Fisher comes in as the top seed in the division and winning will be no easy task. Throughout the match, the Saints make impressive plays but fall short and lose the series 0-2. The Super Smash Bros. team looks to learn from the season and capitalize next season.

Rocket League vs. East Stroudsburg University - March 12

The Saints came into this matchup as one of the top seeds in the league next to ESU. This was going to be a grind of a series right from the start. The Saints were able to tie the first game and send it to overtime with 9 seconds on the clock, and go on to win game 1. Two more close games followed and the saints were able to come out on top of both, including another overtime win. Player of the match for the Saints was Bakki for stepping into a starting role for the first time ever and doing his part to help the team win.

Overwatch vs. York College of Pennsylvania - March 12

The Saints have been hard at work after their last big win looking to continue improving. Their hard work pays off and the Saints are able to win the series in a 3-0 sweep over York College of Pennsylvania. The team looks forward to the next match and are on their way to a playoff position.

League of Legends vs. University of Ottawa - March 13

League of Legends is on a three game win streak and looks to make it four. The Saints come into the match as the lower seed and look to perform another upset. During the first match both teams fight back and forth trying to capitalize on mistakes. However, in the end the Saints fell 0-2 against the University of Ottawa.

Overwatch vs. Saginaw Valley State University - March 14

Overwatch is excited for the match and knows that they need to win the series 3-0 in order to secure themselves a playoff position. However, Saginaw is looking to secure their playoff position as well. After a tough fought series Saginaw prevails and wins the series 3-1 and eliminates the Overwatch team from playoff contention. The team was in its first semester ever and looks to improve and build the team bonds in the off season to come back next season better.

Valorant vs. Montclair State University (Quarterfinal) - March 26

For the first time in program history, the Valorant team makes it into the playoffs. The team was established in the fall and has made tremendous efforts to improve. The team comes in as the number 5 and faces off against the number 4 seed Montclair. The Saints are able to bring the first map into double overtime but in the end lose map one. The Saints look to earn their revenge by winning the second map. However, Montclair State University keeps up their momentum from game one and is able to sweep the Saints 0-2. Valorant is hard at work in the off season prepping to perform at an even higher level next season.

League of Legends vs. Howard Community College (Quarterfinal) - March 30
 
The brand new League of Legends roster has never made it to the playoffs before. The players turn to James Fry and Ryan Wilhelm's leadership during the match. The Saints enter as the number 7 seed and Howard Community College enters as the number 2 seed. The series is hard fought but the Saints end up not being able to hold on and lose 0-2. The League of Legends team has set a new program record in making it to the NECC playoffs and the young team looks to make it further going forward.
