Saints Smack 21 Hits in Blowout Win Over Keuka

Box Score The St. Lawrence Saints softball team broke out offensively in their third win of Thursday, producing 21 hits, including three triples and two doubles, as they downed Keuka 14-4 to complete the 3-0 sweep of their triple header in Florida Thursday.

The victory brings the Saints to a 5-4 record overall on the season.

"Today is a great day to be a Saint," said Rosie Phillips, the Saints' head coach. "We knew playing three games in one day wouldn't be easy, but every single member of the team stepped up today to help us come out on top in each game."

The Saints got to work with extra-base hits early in the game. After two scoreless innings, St. Lawrence would score runs in multiple innings in a row. Maeve Thompson produced the first offense of the game with a two-run triple to left-center field, driving in Emily Crain and Caelen Jahnle to give the Scarlet and Brown a 2-0 lead.

The next at-bat was more of the same for St. Lawrence, when Vivian Johnson ripped a triple to center field, bringing Thompson across the plate. Allison Kloft then brought Johnson around with a single down the left field line to make the score 4-0 at the end of three innings.

In the fourth, after Keuka made it 4-1 in the bottom half of the third, Crain gave the Saints their third triple of the evening when she roped a ball down the right field line and into the corner. Jahnle then scored her with an RBI single.

St. Lawrence continued to make contact in the fourth, with Thompson recording a single. Johnson followed it up with a single of her own, with Thompson going first-to-third. Johnson then stole second. On the steal, Keuka shortstop Haley Jasinski cut off the throw and attempted to gun Thompson out at third, but she threw the ball away, allowing Thomspon to cross the plate. That put the Saints up 6-1. Allison Kloft then made it 7-1 on an RBI single to score Johnson.

With the lead after the big inning, the Saints would continue to score runs to increase their advantage. It was 11-2 in the middle of the sixth inning following two RBI hits from Crain and one from Johnson. However, Keuka scored two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 11-4, keeping the game going by avoiding the eight-run rule.

In the seventh, St. Lawrence would score three more runs, with a Meredith Rose double to right field scoring Kloft. Rose then came around herself on an error by the shortstop. Sofia Camillieri, who reached base on that error, would ultimately come around to score herself, making the score 14-4 at the end of the seventh.

Keuka had a single to kick off the seventh, but the leadoff knock was all they were able to muster. Sofia Berryhill set the next three batters down, including a strikeout swinging to end the game.
Layne Fritz got the win on the mound for the Saints, taking the victory after throwing three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, while not allowing a walk.

Offensively, six Saints had three hits in an impressive offensive performance showcasing the dept of the group.

Crain had three hits in four at-bats, and also added a walk and two ribbies. Jahnle went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Thompson, Johnson and Kloft each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Rose went 3-for-5 with one RBI.

The Saints return to action for their final game of their Florida swing, facing Wisconsin-River Falls Friday morning at 9 a.m.
