Junior defender
Drake Burgin scored an extra-attacker goal late in the third and sophomore
Tyler Cristall scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team a 4-3 win over Colgate after being down 3-0 on Friday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence improved to 10-17-4 with the win and 8-9-2 in ECAC play, while the Raiders fell below .500 at 13-14-4 and 10-7-2 in league play.
"It wasn't the start that we wanted in the first period and we put ourselves in a hole because of it,"Â said Charles W. Appleton II Head Coach
Brent Brekke "I thought we were more physical in the final 40 minutes and defended harder to give Colgate less offensive zone time. But I loved the resilience that we showed and kept grinding to get back into it. Colgate is a really good team and those are two big points that we needed with the overtime win."
The early game belonged to Colgate, who got a goal from Ethan Manderville one minute and ten seconds into the game. The Raiders would get another goal from Daniel Panetta exactly ten minutes later in the first period where Colgate outshot the Saints 11-3.
The deficit would increase to 3-0 five minutes and 34 seconds into the second when Manderville scored his second goal of the contest.
It would take until 13:46 into the second period, but the Skating Saints would begin mounting their comeback. With less than seven minutes left in the middle frame,
Jan Olenginski skipped a pass over to senior
Tucker McIntosh, who fired a pass low on the net that fellow senior
Reilly Moran tipped over the shoulder of Carter Gylander to make it a 3-1 game.
The Scarlet and Brwon continued to turn the tide in the game and made it a one-goal deficit midway through the third. A bad Colgate turnover turned worse when
Ty Naaykens and
Logan Ritchie attacked the net before the puck squirmed to the slot. Cristall would step in and wire a shot through traffic and into the upper part of the net making the score 3-2.
Despite heavy pressure, the Saints wouldn't tie up the contest until the last two minutes with
Ben Kraws on the bench for an extra attacker.
Armed with a 6-on-5,
Philippe Chapleau worked the puck on top of the umbrella to
Felikss Gavars, who one-touched a pass cross-ice to Burgin. Burgin put a shot through a
Max Dorrington screen and in to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime.
In the overtime period, the Saints led with their hot hands in Burgin and Cristall and the duo would come through in the clutch.
The Skating Saints controlled possession and Cristall held the attacking blueline to put the offense on the attack. The sophomore was on a 2-on-1 with
Justin Paul but would take it for himself working the puck to his backhand and roofing a shot over the glove of Gylander to give the Saints the 4-3 win and the extra league point.
Kraws and Gylander would each come up with 26 saves in the effort.
St. Lawrence, who was outshot 11-3 in the first, finished with the 30-29 shot advantage with their barrage in the third. Both teams would come up empty on the man advantage with St. Lawrence going 0-for-1 and Colgate going 0-for-2.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action tomorrow night when the team hosts Cornell on senior night at 7 p.m. Before the game, the St. Lawrence University men's hockey program will honor the nine seniors and three graduate students of the Class of 2024. Â
