Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Battle to 2-2 Tie With No. 11/13 Cornell on Senior Night

Juniors Greg Lapointe and Drake Burgin would tally power play goals, but a late comeback from the Big Red led to overtime where the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team would settle for a 2-2 tie against No. 11/13 Cornell on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.

Cornell would take the shootout 4-3 in the seventh round for the extra league point.

St. Lawrence saw their record move to 10-17-5 on the year and 8-9-3 in ECAC play, while Cornell went to 16-5-6, and 11-5-4 in league play. The Saints have seen their last three games go to overtime going 1-0-2 during that stretch and have gone to overtime in four of their last five games.

Before the contest, the St. Lawrence men's hockey program honored the three graduate students Cameron Buhl, Ben Kraws, and captain Josh Boyer, along with the nine seniors of the Class of 2024 in Luke Erickson, captain Luc Salem, captain Justin Paul, Reilly Moran, Max Dorrington, Nicholas Trela, Tucker McIntosh, Logan Ritchie, and Grant Adams.

The Scarlet and Brown came out firing in a first period that saw the team outshoot the nationally ranked Big Red 14-10.

The first goal of the contest would come 14:07 into the first period with the Saints on the power play. With less than ten seconds remaining in the man-advantage, Will Arquiett and Mason Waite connected to find Lapointe in dangerous territory. The junior sniper did the rest rifling a shot over the shoulder of Ian Shane with five seconds remaining on the power play to take the 1-0 lead.

The lead would double early in the second frame with the Scarlet and Brown on another man-advantage. Tyler Cristall and Ty Naaykens would earn assists on the goal as they found the red-hot Burgin at the blue line. Burgin would fire a shot through traffic and in to put St. Lawrence up 2-0. Burgin's second goal of the weekend gave him seven on the year, tied for second-best on the team, and his 16th point the fourth-best mark on the squad.

The two-goal lead would last late into the third putting Cornell in a position to pull the goalie. The Big Red would score with 1:31 left in the third, then after some questionable non-calls would find the equalizer with 6.8 seconds left in regulation.

The game would head to overtime, where the Saints would have the lopsided advantage thanks to a power play. It looked as if the Saints had scored the game-winning goal with Paul tapping in a loose puck on the doorstep, but the play was reviewed and reversed for an offside call.

St. Lawrence would continue to press and outshot the Big Red 8-2 in the extra period but would end up settling for the tie after five minutes of action.

In the shootout, Cornell would strike first in the opening round but was answered with a dazzling goal from Cristall to knot it up. Ryan Walsh and Lapointe would both get goals in the third round before a pair of misses in the fourth.

Later in the shootout, Arquiett would beat Shane to put the Big Red on the brink before they scored sixth and seventh-round goals to take the extra league point.

Kraws finished with 36 saves in the tie, while Shane made 32 stops on 34 shots.

The Scarlet and Brown finished with the 38-34 edge in shots and dominated in the special teams department going 2-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the kill.

The Skating Saints currently sit in the sixth spot in the standings with 27 points, four behind Clarkson and Dartmouth in a fourth-place tie.

St. Lawrence will finish up their regular season next week when the team heads to Princeton next Friday before heading to Quinnipiac for the regular season finale on Saturday.
