Saints Open Outdoor Season with Nine Event Wins

The St. Lawrence University women's track and field team won nine events, including both relays, to open their outdoor season on a windy April 1st in Canton, N.Y.

The Saints won the first race of the day, the 4x100 meter relay, in 54.15 seconds. Hayley Castagnier ran the opening leg, Cora Knight took the second leg, Kaylee Bertini ran the third, and Olivia Middleton anchored.

With a strong wind at her back, Castagnier would run the fastest time of the day in the 100-meter prelims and a personal best in 12.93 seconds. She would win the final in 13.02 seconds. Knight, Middleton, Laken Mooney, Margaret McNally, and Mackenzie Marcus also qualified for finals.

Middleton would win the long jump with a best distance of 5.30 meters. Caroline Hines won the triple jump, reaching 9.40 meters. Mooney and Marcus took second and third.

Senior Alexa Smith won the 400 meters in 1:05.69 to lead a St. Lawrence top-three sweep. Kristina Koes and first-year Caelan McHarney would take second and third, respectively.

Emma Palumbo won her first collegiate 5,000 meters on the track in 17:59.01. That's the quickest time for any Liberty League runner so far in the outdoor season. Haylei Coolican finished in 18:06.38 for second place and over a minute personal best performance, Olivia Watson took third, and Katherine Sheehy took fourth in the eight-woman race.

The final track event of the day was the 4x400 meter relay. Koes took the first lap and handed the baton off to Lydia Wamsganz in first place. Kaylee Bertini ran the third lap, and Cameran Stone anchored and the team finished in 4:30.97.

Halla Chappell won the pole vault, tying the personal best she set during the indoor season clearing 2.15 meters.

Brooke Martindale won the javelin throw, tossing the spear 33.05 meters. She took second in shot put throwing 9.73 meters. Lacey Eckert threw the discus 33.14 meters for second place, and the hammer 30.63 meters for third.

The Saints won the six-team meet with 281 points ahead of Plattsburgh, Herkimer, Potsdam, Mohawk Valley, and Clarkson. They return to the oval next weekend when they travel to the University of Vermont for a meet on April 8th.
