The St. Lawrence University Overwatch team won its third straight 3-0 match on Monday night, dominating West Virginia University Institute of Technology in a esports contest that took less than 32 minutes to complete.
Sam Putney (SputnikGT),
Gavin Prescott (Hardvark) and
Jason Angelos (neonJason) earned Play of the Game honors for the Saints, who improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in National Association of Collegiate Esports Overwatch Fall Cup play.
The match opened on the Ilios control map, and Saints nearly opened the best-of-three contest with a shutout victory, running their meter up to 99% before the Golden Bears were able to contest the point and gain control. St. Lawrence responded, however, to post a 100-40 win.
In the second contest, West Virginia gained control early, but the Saints were able to contest the point and never lost control, going on to win 100-26 to claim the first point of the match. Putney earned Play of the Game on the first point.
The second point was contested on the Dorado payload map, with the Saints starting on defense. The Golden Bears had an early push, but the Saints prevented West Virginia from advancing the payload to the first checkpoint, then were able to match the Golden Bears' performance in just a minute and a half to take a 2-0 lead. Prescott earned Play of the Game honors in Dorado.
The third point was held on the Eichenwald hybrid map. Opening up on defense, St. Lawrence prevented West Virginia from reaching the control point, then were able to capture the control point in just 37 seconds to claim their third point and clinch the victory.
"The team capitalized on the advantage of their hero mobility in the early rounds, setting us up well," said Saints' Overwatch coach
Kyle Jicha. "Our tank players' spot-on communication allowed us to rotate their shields and not give any ground on Eichenwalde. We're up against a strong team in tomorrow's ECAC match, so I'm hoping we can carry this momentum with us."
The Saints will face Central Connecticut State University in an ECAC match on Wednesday before closing out the week against Glenville State College in NACE play on Thursday. Both matches are scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
