It's been eight months since the Boston College Eagles ended the St. Lawrence women's hockey team's season in the 2017 NCAA tournament.
BC pumped six goals past the Saints team in March; the memory of that dismantling at the hands of the Eagles still weighs on
Chris Wells' SLU team, and they will look to put it firmly in the rearview mirror during this weekend's two-game set against the Eagles at Appleton Arena.
"That was kind of a game where whoever got the early jump was going to come out on top," reflected Wells ahead of this weekend's rematch with the Eagles (8-0-1, USCHO No. 2). "They've got a potent offence, (and) we have to try to limit them, get in their way, take away as much space as we can, and be good in transition."
St. Lawrence (5-3-2, USCHO No. 8) is in good form entering the critical weekend series, having rattled off three straight wins, including a 3-1 decision over USCHO No. 4 Colgate on October 28.
"We took on a personality early in the year, and figured out it wasn't us," explained Wells. "The last couple weeks, we've had a different identity (and) been having a lot more fun."
The Saints' early-season struggles forced the head coach and his staff to make some in-season adjustments — something any Division-I program has gone through at some point.
"We're still kind of finding our way," admitted the '92 St. Lawrence grad. "We thought we'd be a little more advanced, but like all great plans (ours) got crinkled up and thrown in the garbage."
It's a challenge Wells and his team have embraced.
"You adjust, that's the best part of being a coach," chuckled the 10th-year bench boss. "(I) get to make new plans each fall, work through a full season, and get our team to where we all want to be."
Senior forward
Kennedy Marchment admits there is unfinished business between the Saints and BC.
"I think there's definitely some revenge (in the cards) there," said the 2016-17 Patty Katzmaier top-10 finalist. "They ended our season last year, (and) lost a couple girls to (the U.S. national team) this year which might be a benefit for us. If we play our game (and) have a hard-working mentality, we'll be good for the weekend."
The Courtice, Ontario, native believes St. Lawrence's positive locker room, combined with the experience of last year's quarterfinal defeat, will serve the Saints well on the weekend.
"Going into (last year)'s game, we were all pretty nervous and hadn't been there before; it'll be different this weekend," said Marchment. "The potential in our locker room is unbelievable, the work ethic is unmatchable."
Opening faceoff for the first game is set for 6 p.m. on Friday night at Appleton Arena, and the teams will meet for the second game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
