Cheyenne Degeer and
Lilien Benakova scored, but the Harvard Crimson scored in overtime to edge the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 3-2 in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.
Just about six minutes into the first period,
Cheyenne Degeer was in the right place at the right time to redirect a shot from
Riley Reeves on the doorstep of Ainsley Tuffy for the 1-0 lead.
Harvard responded with a goal on the power play to knot things up on the first. Gwynn Lap took an initial shot from the left circle, her shot was stopped by
Kassidy Lawrence, but Ella Lucia was to put one around Lawrence's left leg for the tie game.
Tied up on the scoreboard after the first period, Harvard led 14-9 in shots on goal.
Hanna Olson forced a turnover below the goal line and found Benakova at the top of the left circle. Benakova fired a one timer top corner over the shoulder of Tuffy for the 2-1 advantage.
The Saints applied pressure in the second frame and led 18-15 in shots on goal after 40 minutes.
With 17 second remaining on the Saints power play,
Brooke Mulvihill rang a shot off the crossbar with 16:45 to play in the third.
St. Lawrence continued to pepper Tuffy in the third, with solid chances from
Abby Hehl, Degeer and Mulvihill.
Harvard tied things up once again, as Angelica Megdnis swooped in to the left faceoff dot and fired a shot over the glove of Lawrence with 7:05 to go in the third, which would eventually force overtime.
The Crimson's final goal came off the stick of Kaley MacDonald. MacDonald's shot was sent into the air, took a weird bounce and came back down across the goal line for the overtime win.
"One of the more wilder seasons in overtime this year ended in one of the wildest ways," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Our team played hard and we could have easily come out on top. The entire season was a game of inches. 12 overtime games. 23 one-goal games. All of this will be a benefit moving forward, but heartbreaking for our seniors who have completed their careers here. They had some great experiences and successes along the way that will outweigh tonight's loss as time moves on."
Lawrence finished with 27 saves for the Saints, while Tuffy also made 27 saves for Harvard.
The Crimson finished with a 30-29 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-1 on the power play.
St. Lawrence closed the season at 11-21-3, while Harvard improved to 15-13-3 and will advance to play Princeton in the ECAC Quarterfinals next weekend.
