Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Côté Scores Back-to-Back to Tie Game Late; Saints Edged by No. 11 Cornell in Overtime

Alexia Côté scored back-to-back extra attacker goals to force overtime, but with 59.5 seconds left in the extra frame, the 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red pulled off a 4-3 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Friday evening at Appleton Arena.

The Big Red built an early lead over the Saints, scoring three unanswered goals in the span of about three minutes.

St. Lawrence cut Cornell's lead to two with a goal from senior captain Kennedy Wilson.

Brooke Mulvihill won the faceoff, which landed on the stick of Alexa Davis, who pushed it off to Wilson at the top of the left circle. Wilson fired a shot past Annelies Bergmann to make it 3-1.

After the first 20 minutes, Cornell outshot SLU 19-6.

Cornell held onto their 3-1 lead after the second frame, as both goalies held their opponents scoreless, and the Saints were able to apply a bit more pressure in the second. The Big Red continued to lead 26-18 in shots on goal after the second.

With 2:43 to play in the third, the Saints pulled Lawrence for the extra skater.

Just 36 seconds later, Côté scored her first of the night with a rocket from the point to bring the game within one. Lilien Benakova took a long-range shot from the blue line, which was collected by Brooke Mulvihill in the corner. Mulvihill sent the puck back to Côté, whose shot made it through traffic and under the blocker of Bergmann.

After the faceoff, the Saints pulled Lawrence again, and with 1:04 to go, Côté struck again. Côté and Benakova played give and go at the top of the left circle, Benakova's shot redirected off a Big Red defender and went right to Côté, who caught Bergmann out of position for the goal.

The two goals from Côté in the third sent the game to overtime, marking the Saints 11th overtime of the season.

The Saints had some great chances off the bat, but with 59.5 seconds left in the extra frame, Grace Dwyer secured the 4-3 win for Cornell.

"I'm real happy for our team to comeback the way we did," said head coach Chris Wells. "We had a lot of chances not go in earlier so it was good to see those go in 6-on-5. We were coming off our best week of practice this week so the first 10 minutes was a bit of a surprise to us, but Wilson's goal was a big stabilizer for us to get out of the first just down by two."

"We slowly chipped away and got some momentum in the second, which carried over into the end of the game," Wells added. "Three great OT chances to put it away before Cornell scored as well. It was an exciting game and we had a nice crowd to watch it."

Lawrence stopped 35 shots for the Saints, while Bergmann finished with 32.

Despite their early lead in shots on goal, Cornell finished with a 67-65 edge in shots, including 39-35 in shots on goal.

St. Lawrence moved to 11-19-3 on the season and 8-12-1 in league play, while Cornell improved to 17-10-2 and 13-7-1.

The Saints will host No. 15 Colgate for the regular season finale, tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Following tomorrow's game, the Saints will honor the Class of 2026 with a senior day celebration.
