Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gannon Leads Saints Past Bears in Double Overtime

First-year Megan Gannon scored in the 109th minute to give the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team a 2-1 double-overtime win over SUNY Potsdam in the team's non-conference finale on Tuesday evening.

Gannon redirected a corner kick from junior Hannah Merriam behind Bears' goalkeeper Bri Thibeau late in the second extra session to help the Saints improve to 9-4-3 overall on the year, while Potsdam falls to 9-7-2.

"While our possession game was steady we had a very challenging time figuring out how to penetrate them defensively," head coach Franco Bari '98 said. "Potsdam was extremely organized defensively and did not provide us with much space to play. I was pleased with how we were persistent in the attack and how we scored a well-earned goal to end the match."

St. Lawrence's first goal was also tallied by a first-year player, as Kira Murphy notched the first of her career in the 44th minute to give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Senior Amy Reunert picked up an assist on the play, as she fed Murphy for a shot at the top of the box that sailed over Thibeau's head.

The Saints were dominant offensively in the match, outshooting the Bears 30-8 overall with a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. They also took seven corner kicks, while conceding just two to the Bears.

But it was on Potsdam's second corner kick that they found the equalizer in the 83rd minute to force overtime against the Saints. Rylie Murray took the kick for Potsdam and found Kaylen Van Wagner at the top of the box. Van Wagner's shot bested junior goalkeeper Jackie Sovie for her sixth goal of the year and a 1-1 game.

Sovie finished with two saves in the win, her sixth of the season, while Thibeau made 12 stops for Potsdam in the loss.

The Saints will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29th with a Liberty League match at Clarkson. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
