No. 19 Saints Win Back and Forth Battle with Bengals

Dan Hunt '16 opened the scoring for St. Lawrence in Buffalo on Sunday.
Box Score Sept. 14: A pair of second half goals helped the No. 19 St. Lawrence men's soccer team win a back and forth battle with the Buffalo State Bengals on Sunday afternoon. First-year student Chandler Short scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to secure a 4-3 Saints win.

Short, junior captain Dan Hunt and senior Sars Bowman each tallied their first goals of the season on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Rob Brandell also scored for the Saints. Additionally, Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Houston, who made his second consecutive start for the Saints, made three saves in his first collegiate victory.

Now 4-2 on the season, St. Lawrence jumped out to a 1-0 early in the second minute when Hunt collected a blocked shot and beat Bengals goalkeeper Hunter Hein for his first goal of the season.

The Bengals answered back in the fourth minute, when Francesco Cardillo split the Saints defense and hit Joe Vucic who fired a blast into the far left corner behind Houston to make it 1-1.

But Bowman sent the game to halftime with the Saints lead 2-1 after he jumped on a loose ball in the box in the 40th minute. Hein initially made a save on a shot by Mark Provost, but couldn't control the rebound and Bowman was there to put it home for his first goal of the season.

Early in the second half, Brandell extended the Saints lead to 3-1. After a Bengals defender failed to head the ball clear of the box, the Glen Ridge, New Jersey native beat Buffalo State's second goalkeeper Robby Kuhnle, who took over in goal for the Bengals at the half.

Once again, the Bengals had an answer, as Vucic added his second of the afternoon in the 62nd minute to pull his team with one. But Short's first collegiate tally in the 77th minute off a feed from Provost pushed the Saints lead back to two goals and proved to be enough to hold on for the win, despite another Bengals goal just over two minutes later.

They finished with 21-14 edge in shots, with nine shots on goal and forced the Bengals goalkeeping duo to make five saves.

Next up for the Saints is a road game at SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.
