No. 6 Clarkson Powers Past Saints

Box Score Jan. 10: In its first home game since November 9, the St. Lawrence women's hockey team ran into a stifling Clarkson offense and fell to the No. 6 Golden Knights 6-0 in the first half of this weekend's home-and-home series.

"Clarkson showed up and played a game that only a few teams would have had an answer for," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Chris Wells. "They were strong on the puck, back checked and didn't' allow us to generate any momentum."

Clarkson controlled the play from the opening faceoff and scored its first goal on the 12:40 mark of the first period on a Jamie Lee Rattray breakaway.

It looked as though the Saints had tied the game early in the middle frame when the officials initially signaled a goal for senior tri-captain Rylee Smith, who had carried the puck beneath the red line and attempted to stuff a backhand shot underneath the pads of Clarkson netminder Erica Howe. However, after video review, the call on the ice was overturned and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Golden Knights.

Less than two minutes later, Shannon MacAulay beat Carmen MacDonald with a soft wrister from the slot, and swung all the momentum back to the visitors. Brittany Styner would score midway through the second to give Clarkson a 3-0 lead heading into the third.

Rattray tallied her second of the night at the one minute and 11 seconds into the final session, and Vanessa Gagnon scored just 49 seconds later to give Clarkson the 5-0 advantage and put the game out of reach for the Saints. Genevieve Bannon added an empty-net goal with just under three minutes to play for Clarkson's sixth goal.

Carmen MacDonald finished with 38 saves for the Saints.

"Clarkson is a team that is playing with great confidence and it showed," Wells said. "We played to the end and I was happy to see the resolve in our team. We have a real good group here and we look forward to bouncing back."

The second game of the home-and-home, and final regular-season meeting between these two rivals, will be played on Saturday, January 11 at Clarkson's Cheel Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
