Saints Rally Falls Short at Mercyhurst

Rookie Brooke Webster had a goal and an assist against Mercyhurst on Wednesday.
Box Score Nov. 27: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team lost its final contest of 2013 on Wednesday, as Mercyhurst College held on for a 3-2 victory in Erie, PA to earn a two-game sweep.  Rookie Brooke Webster made it a one-goal game in the final minute, but the Saints were unable to force overtime.

St. Lawrence, which will not play again until January 4 at Robert Morris, enters the second semester with a 6-9-1 record.  Mercyhurst (10-5-2) won on Wednesday despite being outshot by St. Lawrence 35-33, as Amanda Makela was brilliant between the pipes.

"We had a very good response to our effort yesterday. The team played one of our better games of the year," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "We moved the puck well on our rushes and power play."

The Lakers owned a 2-0 lead after the first period thanks to a goal by J'nai Mahadeo at 5:04 and another by Christie Cicero only 4:05 later.  Molly Byrne assisted on both goals, including the second which came on the power play.

St. Lawrence would get on the board at 5:58 of the second period on the power play, as rookie Kirsten Padalis scored her second goal of the weekend to cut the deficit to one at 2-1.  Webster and Kayla Raniwsky were credited with assists.

Mercyhurst would get the goal back at 11:03, pushing the lead to 3-1 before the second intermission.  Kathy Donohue got the crucial goal, with Jenna Dingeldein and Cicero assisting.

The Saints had several great chances in the third period to get back into the game, but Makela came up with some huge stops to keep her team in control.  With the clock winding down in regulation, the Saints were on a 5-on-3 power play and pulled goaltender Carmen MacDonald for a 6-on-3 try.  Webster cashed in with :12 seconds left, pulling St. Lawrence to within a goal at 3-2.  Senior co-captains Mel Desrochers and Dayle Wilkinson assisted on the goal.  However, Mercyhurst was able to shut down the Saints in the final seconds to preserve the win.

"Makela made some fantastic saves throughout the game especially in the third when we had some super chances and looks," added Coach Wells.  "There is plenty to build on over the break as we look to make another strong push in ECAC Hockey second semester."

Makela closed with 33 saves in the win, while MacDonald made 30 stops.  St. Lawrence had two power play goals for the second straight game (2-for-7), while Mercyhurst was 1-for-5 on the power play.
