Box Score Nov. 2: The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team, ranked #19 nationally, captured the Liberty League regular season title with a 3-0 victory over Clarkson (3-12, 1-7) in Potsdam, NY this afternoon.
The Saints improve to 13-2-2 (7-1 Liberty League) and will host a conference tournament semifinal game on Wednesday with the opponent and time to be announced.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Aaron Costello made two saves on the day to earn his 14th shutout of the season. The Saratoga Springs, NY native now owns the St. Lawrence program record for shutouts in a single season.
St. Lawrence got on the board in the 4th minute when
Praveen Balakumaran handled a cross in the attacking zone and centered a pass to
Seyefe Brouk, who took a running start and kicked the ball to the right of a diving Clarkson goalkeeper Michael King to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
Scoring chances were hard to come by throughout the game as the teams combined for just 15 shots. Angelo DiFrancesco had the best opportunity for the Knights in the first half, but his shot in the 13th minute was saved by Saints' goalkeeper
Aaron Costello.
St. Lawrence would add to its lead at the beginning of the second half as
Jamal Samaroo found
Mark Provost in the middle of the box. Provost finished with a hard ground ball to the right of King for his sixth goal of the season to put St. Lawrence up 2-0.
Sophomore back
Dan Hunt would cap the Saints' scoring in the 65th minute with his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Provost.
The two teams combined for only six shots on net, but St. Lawrence held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
