No. 3 Clarkson Earns Sweep, Tops Saints 4-1

Abbey McRae and the Saints wore pink in support of "Pink at the Rink" on Saturday.
Box Score Oct. 5: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell behind nationally-ranked No. 3 Clarkson University only 1:52 into the first period on Saturday, and the Golden Knights never looked back en route to a 4-1 win at Appleton Arena.  Junior Jackie Wand's power play goal in the third made it a 3-1 game, but Clarkson's Jamie Lee Rattray put the game away with an empty net goal in the final minute.

St. Lawrence (1-3) hosted "Pink in the Rink" on Saturday, raising funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.  The Saints wore pink laces and taped their sticks and equipment in pink as well.  Players from other teams on campus, including football and women's tennis, also donned pink in support of the event.  Meanwhile, Clarkson (3-0) used a 30-17 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 edge in the third, to stay unbeaten in the young season.

"We can take quite a bit from this weekend.  We were able to see plenty of things that will allow us to play at the level we would like to," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "Clarkson is too good of a team for us to have to play from behind.  They have great chemistry, experience and belief with how they can play."

Shelby Nisbet's goal only 1:52 into the game set the tone for the visitors, as they played from ahead just like on Friday night.  She beat St. Lawrence goalie Giulia Mazzocchi for her second of the season, assisted by Olivia Hoe and Genevieve Bannon.

Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe made nine saves in the first period, allowing her team to extend the lead to 2-0 at 17:37 when Vanessa Gagnon beat Mazzocchi.  Assists on the play went to Vanessa Plante and Brittany Styner.

The second period was a quiet stanza, as the two teams combined for only nine shots on net.  However, Bannon started the third period off right for Clarkson, scoring a power play goal at 3:38 for a 3-0 lead.  Plante and Gagnon assisted on the insurance goal.

Wand would draw the Saints within two at 8:11 on the power play, as her first of the season came from senior Bailey Habsheid and rookie Kirsten Padalis.  However, the Knights' 14-4 advantage in shots would help protect Erica Howe's net before Rattray's empty net goal put the game away at 19:25.

St. Lawrence was 1-for-3 on the power play while Clarkson was 1-for-4.  Mazzocchi, who again started in place of the injured Carmen MacDonald, made 26 saves while Howe stopped 16 shots for Clarkson.

The Saints will host Montreal in an exhibition contest at Appleton Arena this Tuesday evening at 5:00pm.  The team will then hit the road for Chestnut Hill, MA for a two-game series with nationally-ranked No. 2 Boston College on October 11 and 12.
