Season Recap: Skating Saints Celebrate Centennial Season in 2025-26; Svartström Named to ECAC All-Rookie Team

First-year Rasmus Svartström was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team, and senior Tyler Cristall put together the most productive offensive season by a Saint since 2013-14, highlighting a memorable Centennial Season for the St. Lawrence University men's hockey program.

Beyond the action on the ice, the program celebrated its Legends of Appleton in November with a weekend of remembrance and tradition. The weekend began with a Celebration of Life honoring the late Ray Shero '84 and continued with the 2025 Legends of Appleton induction, welcoming Shero '84 and Tom O'Connor '75 into the exclusive group.

St. Lawrence finished the season with a 7-25-3 overall record and a 6-15-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play, but the Saints gained momentum late and made their mark down the stretch.

That spark was lit on January 23 when the Scarlet and Brown walked into Cheel Arena and earned a shootout win over their bitter rival. First-years led the charge, as Sam LeDrew, Luke Santilli, and Svartström combined for four goals. The Saints followed that up with a 5-2 victory on home ice the next night, giving the group confidence heading into the final weeks of the season.

Wins over Princeton, RPI, Brown, and Yale in the following weeks led St. Lawrence to the 11th seed in the ECAC Tournament and a road matchup with Harvard in the ECAC Opening Round. The Saints pushed the Crimson to overtime as goals from Cooper Pierson, Svartström, and LeDrew kept the game even before Harvard netted the game-winner in the extra session.

Svartström authored a breakout season in his first year in Scarlet and Brown, appearing in 34 of the team's 35 games while leading the Saints with 17 goals and finishing tied for second on the team with 24 points. His goal total surpassed Mike Marnell '18's 15-goal season in 2016-17, which had stood as the program's highest mark over the previous 12 seasons.

The newcomer is the first Skating Saint since Luc Salem '24 to earn a spot on the ECAC All-Rookie Team and finished just one goal shy of matching the program's top singles-season totals of the past decade-plus, trailing only Greg Carey '14 and Matt Carey, who both scored 18 goals in 2013-14.

Svartström's 24 points were also the most by a Saints first-year player since Zach Risteau totaled 18 points during his rookie campaign in 2018-19. He became the first newcomer since Ben Finkelstein (5-18-23) to eclipse the 20-point plateau in his first season.

Cristall delivered a standout senior season, leading the Saints in both assists and points while setting career highs across the board. He appeared in 34 games and finished with 10 goals, 21 assists, and 31 points, becoming the first Saint since 2013-14 to crack the 30-point mark. That season saw Greg Carey (57), Matt Carey (37), Gavin Bayreuther (36), Jeremy Wick (35), and Justin Baker (32) all reach the milestone.

Elsewhere in the lineup, St. Lawrence received valuable contributions from newcomers Pierson (5-15-20), LeDrew (10-8-18), and Filip Juříček (9-9-18), as well as sophomores Cayden Casey (4-20-24) and Isaac Tremblay (8-8-16), who notably surged offensively in the season's closing weeks alongside his linemates Gabe Westling (2-9-11) and Nicholas Beneteau (5-4-9).

In the net, Cameron Smith emerged late in the year, starting 13 games and steadying the team during the Saints' late push. The junior posted a 5-7-1 record with a 3.44 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage in his junior season.

The Saints will graduate four seniors this spring in Isack Bandu, Cristall, assistant captain Jan Lasak, and graduate student Jack Babbage, who signed a professional contract with the Jacksonville Icemen of the ECHL.
