Season Recap: Shorthanded Women's Basketball Overcomes Adversity, Reaches LL Semifinal in 2025-26

The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team closed out the 2025–26 season with a 17-10 overall record and an 11-7 mark in Liberty League play, earning a home playoff game amid a host of adverse situations.

The Saints did it all while navigating a significant injury situation. Elizabeth Flynn, who led the team in both points and rebounds in 2024-25, missed a substantial portion of the season, as did guard Annie Perry. At times in early January, four or five of the team's top eight contributors were either sidelined or playing limited minutes.

"We faced more adversity in terms of injuries than any other team I've had," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. "We had an average of two starters missing in games after Christmas, which is most of our league play, and we managed to get 17 wins and a home playoff game while navigating constantly shifting lineups."

Rather than fold, St. Lawrence players stepped into unfamiliar positions, absorbed expanded roles, and found ways to win. That resilience paid off in the postseason. The Saints knocked off Vassar in the first round, 63-53, earning the program's first playoff win since 2022. Norah Niesz led the way with 16 points in the victory.

Niesz was later named to the CSC Academic All-District team alongside senior Hannah Van Dyke; recognition of the program's commitment both on the court and in the classroom.

The four seniors were at the heart of everything the Saints accomplished. Jackie Malley finished third in the Liberty League in scoring at 13.5 points per game and led the entire conference in three-point field goal percentage at .397. She was named to the All-Liberty League First Team.

"Jackie continued to be the best shooter in our league and stepped up in key situations usually towards the ends of games," Roiger said. "I would say that each of our four seniors had the best year of their careers this year. What a great way to finish!"

The season ended in a semifinal that came down to the final minutes of play. Running a defensive scheme they had never used before, according to their head coach, St. Lawrence trailed by just five points with five minutes remaining and created three straight open three-point looks for proven shooters

"Even though it was a loss, I felt like it was a win and felt so proud of the young ladies in that locker room," Roiger said.

"They could have used all the injuries as an excuse to why they couldn't be successful," the coach reflected. "Instead, they used the injuries to unite themselves and then played intelligently and motivated to find ways to win games. I am very proud of this squad and feel like we had an outstanding year."
