As the St. Lawrence University riding team hosted back-to-back shows this past weekend at the Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall, the Saints also prepared to host another special gathering, scheduled to follow Saturday's horse show.
Thanks to the wonderful generosity of an anonymous donor, the west side of the barn was renovated to include a new feed room, tack room, horse stalls and grooming stalls. With special wishes, these renovations were completed in memory of Maggie Blackmon '21, who passed away in February of 2020.
"Elsa had a vision in 1967, and it is my hope she fully got to understand what she gifted the St. Lawrence riding community," said head coach
Mary Drueding. "For those of us who share a passion for horses and riding she gave us a home. A place where we could come together to ride, learn, grow up, grow older, win championships and experience all the highs and lows associated with team goals."
Maggie's parents and family, along with University President Kate Morris, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Franco Bari, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the St. Lawrence riding program joined the current team for a dedication ceremony, plaque unveiling, and dinner celebration this past Saturday.
"Where we stand this evening is a truly remarkable place — a place that some may call an arena, a riding hall, a barn, or simply a facility," said Bari at Saturday's ceremony. "But I see it as something more. I see it as a home. A home that is deeply cared for, where memories are made, traditions are strengthened, and lifelong relationships are built. It reflects the very best of what it means to be a Saint; commitment to one another, pride in our shared purpose, and respect for the work that happens here every single day."
Maggie's horse Lucy, who was previously donated to the riding program by the Blackmon and Lewis family, continues to bring joy to all those at the barn and especially those that remember and love Maggie. Just like Lucy, these renovations will continue to bring joy to current and future Saints.
"Tonight, Elsa's vision for St. Lawrence riding becomes relevant again," Drueding added. These gifts close this phase of a major renovation of a facility, which now once again showcases its successful program, its dedication to its student athletes and its equally important dedication to all the horses we are fortunate enough to share this evening with tonight. From SLU riding past, present, and future from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you."
Saturday's ceremony also recognized the great philanthropy surrounding the riding program, from the anonymous donor who helped finish the west wing of the barn that was most recently celebrated, but also to the ones that started raising funds for barn renovations in 2016 – University Trustee Jim Tyler and his wife Charlene.
