Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Tremblay, LeDrew, and Svartström Score First Period Goals; Skating Saints Fall at Colgate

The Saints got first-period goals from Isaac Tremblay, Sam LeDrew, and Rasmus Svartström, but seven goals from the home team led the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 7-3 loss to Colgate on Saturday night in Hamilton, N.Y.

St. Lawrence fell to 7-24-3 with the loss and 6-15-1 in ECAC play, while Colgate improved to 12-18-4 and 9-10-3 in league action.

The game started slowly for both teams, and there weren't many good chances in the early going. Andrew Takacs had to make a pair of alert saves on Andrew Brown and Svartström, but the dam eventually burst as six goals were scored in the first.

At the 11:12 mark of the first, the first goal crossed the line thanks to Tremblay. Sam Frandina skipped a pass across the blueline to Luke Santilli, who dumped the puck deep into the Raider zone. Tremblay picked the puck up off the wall and snuck a shot under Takacs to take the lead.

Just 1:11 later, the Saints doubled their lead thanks to a turnover in the Colgate end. Filip Juříček was applying a heavy forecheck and caused a turnover on the left wall. He fired a pass from the boards to the back door, where LeDrew redirected the puck home to make it 2-0.

After the goal, everything broke loose as Colgate scored 15 seconds later and added two more in the next two minutes to stun St. Lawrence and take a 3-2 lead in the blink of an eye.

The Skating Saints stuck with it, however, and tied the game at 3-3 before the end of the period. Cooper Pierson and Captain Jan Olenginski were working below the goal line, and the junior defender found Svartström on the side of the goal. The first-year did what he does best, jamming home his team-leading 16th goal of the season to knot the game.

Of the eight goals scored in ECAC play during their respective first periods, six of them came from the Raiders and Saints.

Gabe Westling had a chance early in the second period for St. Lawrence, but a mad scramble in front led to Colgate gaining the 4-3 lead. Isack Bandu and Juříček also had good looks, but the Raiders ultimately took a 6-3 lead into the third period.

The Saints had an early power-play chance in the final frame, but despite a good chance by Tyler Cristall, they were unable to gain any ground on the chance.

The rest of the game was marred with penalties, and the Raiders tacked on a seventh goal to make it a 7-3 final.

Cameron Smith made 37 saves in the Saints' net, while Takacs came up with 18 saves.

Colgate went 1-for-7 on the man-advantage, while the Saints were afforded just one chance on the power play and went 0-for-1.

With the regular season slate in the rear view mirror, the Skating Saints will turn their attention to the ECAC Hockey Championships' Opening Round, where they will head to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard in a single-elimination contest. The game will take place on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m.
