The Saints got three second-period goals from
Gunnar Thoreson,
Sam Frandina, and
Jake Lammens, but a third-period goal from the visitors led to the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team settling for a 3-3 tie against Stonehill on Saturday at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence went to 2-16-2 overall with the draw, while the Skyhawks moved to 4-13-2.
For the second straight night, there was a very early goal in the contest, this time coming from Stonehill. Matthew Rafalski buried his shot at the 1:17 mark of the first period to give Stonehill the lead.
Despite pushes from both teams, the game would go to intermission at 1-0. The second period, however, was a wild one that saw four goals between the two sides.
The first goal of the frame came exactly six minutes in. Junior captain
Jan Olenginski handled the puck for the Saints and sent a pass across the blueline to
Jack Babbage. The graduate student's shot on goal was deflected on frame by
Evan Orloff, who stuck with the play and pushed the rebound to the back door, where Thoreson knotted the game at 1-1.
Stonehill answered a minute and 17 seconds later with a goal from Pat Murphy to regain their lead.
The Scarlet and Brown continued to push and tied the game back up at the 11:02 mark.
Frankie Carogioiello earned the secondary assist on the play, passing off to
Andrew Brown, who went D-to-D to Frandina. The shifty first-year defender side-stepped a defender and wired a long-range wrist shot over the glove of the goalie to make it 2-2.
The Saints once again used a long-range approach and took the lead with less than three minutes left in the second.
Tyler Cristall started the play, causing a turnover in the Skyhawk end, and sent a pass up the boards to Lammens. The defender fired a shot past a screen and in to make it 3-2. The goal was the first for Lammens as a Skating Saint.
Things would settle down in the third, but the Skyhawks tied the game up 3:46 into the period with a goal from Joseph Grainda.
St. Lawrence applied heavy pressure in the latter stages of the third to regain the lead, but Connor Androlewicz was up to the task. A late power play for the Saints put the Skyhawks on the defensive, and the man-advantage extended into the overtime frame.
Filip Juricek and Cristall each had shots in overtime on the power play but couldn't find paydirt. The power play came and went, but without any stoppages, the rest of overtime was played 4-on-4.
The Scarlet and Brown fired four more shots on the net, but the game ended in a draw. Stonehill scored a goal in the shootout round, but the game ended as a 3-3 draw.
Colin Winn made 32 saves in the tie, while Androlewicz came up with 29.
Both teams were perfect on the kill, with the Saints going 1-for-1 and the Skyhawks 3-for-3.
The Skating Saints will be back in action next week as they begin their 14-game ECAC stretch run against Yale and Brown on the road.
