Cheyenne Degeer and
Brooke Mulvihill each scored twice to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-2 win over RPI on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
The Saints picked up six league points with the weekend sweep and improved to 9-14-2 overall and 6-7-0 in league play, while RPI fell to 6-21-0 and 3-13-0.
Much like Friday night, the Saints struck first again.
Ella Nancarrow took the initial shot on net from the right circle, but Reese Keating gave up a rebound and after a couple bounces was pushed in by Mulvihill for the 1-0 lead.
RPI tied it up on a goal from Sabrina Beaudoin, but Degeer scored her first of the afternoon, as she redirected a shot from the point by
Kennedy Emerson for the one-goal lead with 1:21 remaining in the first period.
After the first 20 minutes, SLU outshot RPI 18-7.
Mulvihill scored her second of the afternoon in similar fashion to her first.
Kennedy Wilson battled her way into the zone and took the initial shot and a rebound from Keating went straight to the stick of Mulvihill, who hammered it home for the 3-1 advantage.
Five and a half minutes later, Degeer cashed in on another second-chance opportunity to extend the Saints lead to three goals.
Abby Hehl and
MacKenzie Clarke assisted on the play.
The Engineers continued to battle back, as a power play goal slipped past
Emma-Sofie Nordström to make it 4-2.
RPI pulled Keating with 1:50 on the clock, but the Saints defense battled mostly at the blue line and with 11.3 seconds to play,
Kiley Mastel sent a long shot down ice for the empty netter to seal the weekend sweep for the Saints.
"Another good first period got us going today and one of our best second periods of the year gave us the lead we needed," said head coach
Chris Wells.
"We did a good job finishing the game in the third," Wells added. "A huge block and empty netter to get the six points on the weekend. With the league so tight any points are good points and a full house of six is great!"
Nordström recorded 23 saves for the Saints, while Keating finished with 37 for RPI.
St. Lawrence outshot RPI 71-49 and led 42-25 in shots on goal. Both teams capitalized on the power play, as the Saints went 1-for-2 and the Engineers went 1-for-3.
The Saints face a quick turnaround, as they host Clarkson for game four of the Route 11 rivalry series this season on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
