Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Haslam Nets First Career Hat Trick, Saints Down Union 5-2

Rylan Haslam recorded her first career hat trick to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-2 win over Union College on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

With the win, the Saints improved to 8-14-2 overall and 5-7-0 in ECAC play, while Union fell to 8-14-3 and 2-12-1.

Haslam tallied four total points with an assist, while Brooke Mulvihill and Lilien Benakova also scored for SLU. Kennedy Emerson tallied two assists, while Cheyenne Degeer, Taeyeon Kim, Alexa Davis, Meghan Crowley, Abby Hehl and MacKenzie Clarke all recorded helpers in the win.

Haslam got things started for the Scarlet and Brown, as she went bar down. The goal wasn't originally called but was reviewed and ruled a 1-0 lead for the Saints.

Just about seven minutes later, Haslam netted her second of the game, scoring back-to-back, going over the glove of Union goaltender Monja Wagner on the back pass from Kim.

Mulvihill made it 3-0, as she tipped a centering pass from the left circle by Alexa Davis.

St. Lawrence ended the first 20 minutes with a 3-0 lead and an 18-12 advantage in shots on goal.

The Saints continued to extend their lead in the second as Benakova circled wide and sent a shot just over the leg of Wagner. Wagner made the stop, but lost the puck, which slow rolled over the goal line for the 4-0 lead.

Union put their first point on the board with the lone goal of the second period as Maddie Leaney pulled the puck off the boards in the neutral zone and went in all alone to score on the power play.

After two periods, SLU led 28-20 in shots on goal.

The Garnet Chargers second goal came off a turnover in the St. Lawrence slot to make it 4-2 with 16:54 to play in the third.

With just under three minutes to play, Union pulled Wagner for the extra attacker. Haslam secured the hat trick with an empty net goal with 21.7 seconds left in the third for the 5-2 final.

"It was nice to be back at Appleton and play in front of our fans," said head coach Chris Wells. "We were able to get a good start and that was following a real good week of practice. The team was rewarded for a lot of their efforts. Emma made some key saves especially late in the game to preserve the win!"

Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded 31 saves for the Saints, while Wagner finished with 32 for the Garnet Chargers.

St. Lawrence outshot Union 67-58 including a 37-33 edge in shots on goal. Both teams struck on the power play, as the Saints went 1-for-3 and Union finished 1-for-5.

The Saints will be back at Appleton Arena tomorrow afternoon, as they host RPI at 3 p.m.
