The St. Lawrence University football team hosted Alfred University for the inaugural Steve Munn '64 game on Laurentian Weekend. The Saxons topped the Saints 35-13 on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
Will Lederman passed 7-for-13 for 117 yards, while
Sean Miles passed 7-for-10 for 67 yards. Miles also ran for 11 yards and recorded his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Shea Goodwin finished with four catches for 79 yards, while
Nicholas Huhtala and
Owen Tucker recorded two catches apiece.
Both
Ryan Surhoff and
Savino Morelli picked up a team-best 11 tackles, while
John Finnegan finished with nine.
Ethan Metro logged five tackles, including three for the loss of 13 and a sack for the loss of five. Surhoff and
Shea Goodwin recorded a forced fumble, while
John Finnegan and
Anthony Ferro each broke up a pass.
Saints' kicker
Clayton Fogler put SLU on the board first with a 33-yard field goal at 7:03 of the first quarter, but with 40 seconds to play in the frame Alfred quarterback Chris Kelly found Jonye Rosebury Jr. with a 34-yard pass for the Saxons first touchdown.
Fogler recorded his fourth made field goal of the season, opening scoring in the second quarter with a 36-yarder to bring the Saints back within one at 7-6.
Kelly found Carmine Hoag in the endzone, finishing off an 80-yard drive to give the Saxons a 14-6 lead at the break.
The Saxons put up two touchdowns in the third quarter, both on the run, to pull ahead 28-6.
With 4:52 to play in the fourth, Jack Bestpitch intercepted a pass from Miles and ran for 48 yards, making the score 35-6.
Miles capped a 57-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown for his first career touchdown. Fogler's final kick was good for the 35-13 finish.
Kelly passed for 246 yards on 15 attempts, while Tommy Nyquist led the ground game with 97 yards and Carmine Hoag caught six passes for 126 yards. TJ March led the Saxons defense with two and a half sacks for the loss of 19 yards, while Michael Davis recorded a team-high nine tackles.
Alfred recorded a 22-15 advantage in first downs, picked up 398 yards on offense to the Saints 218 and converted on 6-of-11 third-down opportunities.
The Saints moved to 1-2 on the season, while Alfred improved to 2-1.
St. Lawrence opens Liberty League play on the road, as they travel to Union on Saturday, September 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Prior to the start of today's game, the Saints honored the late Steve Munn, Class of 1964. Steve's daughter and University trustee Robyn Munn Gengras '94, and his granddaughter Mary '28 and family friend and sophomore lineman Jack Stuart joined the St. Lawrence captains for the coin toss.
Munn's family generously gave a gift of 1.5 million dollars to endow the head football coaching position. The family gift recognizes Munn's roles as a former student-athlete and supporter of St. Lawrence athletics, a past University trustee, and proud parent and grandparent. St. Lawrence's game on Laurentian Weekend, has been named the Steve Munn '64 game.
