Season Preview: Saints Open 2025 Under the Lights, Host Hoffman Cup Game vs. Norwich

The St. Lawrence University football team kicks off the 2025 season with a home game at Leckonby Stadium, as they host the Norwich Cadets under the lights for the annual Hoffman Cup Game this Friday, September 5 at 7 p.m.

Captains for the Scarlet and Brown this season are seniors Shea Goodwin, Ryan Surhoff and junior Savino Morelli.

Goodwin finished the season with 29 catches for 319 yards, good for 11 yards a catch. His longest catch of the season was 66 yards, and he recorded one touchdown.

Surhoff logged 63 tackles (29 solo, 34 assists) on the season, including nine tackles for the loss of 33 yards and two sacks for the loss of 17. He also recorded three pass breakups.

Morelli led the Saints squad with 68 tackles (27 solo, 41 assists) in 2024. He finished with six tackles for the loss of 19 yards, one sack for the loss of seven, one interception and one pass break up.

Along with Surhoff, who earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors last season, the Saints also return senior kicker Clayton Fogler, who earned a spot on the league's Honorable Mention list.

Fogler was the team's leading scorer with 33 points on the year, thanks to a perfect 7-for-7 in field goals and going 12-of-13 in PAT's. He also totaled 29 kickoffs for 1,548 yards for an average of 54.1 yards and two touch backs.

Will Lederman will also be a key piece to the St. Lawrence offense this season, returning to the quarterback position for the Scarlet and Brown. In 2023, Lederman passed for 934 yards with 100 completions and seven touchdowns, averaging 93.4 yards per game. Leading the ground game for the past two years, he rushed for 312 yards in 2023 and 313 yards in 2024. He ranked among the league's top 10 in rushing touchdowns (fourth), rushing yards per game (eighth), and total yards (ninth) last season.

Goodwin, along with Nicholas Huhtala, Matt Ciesielski, will be the top targets for Lederman this season, while James Gescheidle and Jackson Tewksbury will back him up on the ground.

Senior Peter Sleeper and juniors Finn Murphy and Jack Drought will anchor the offensive line, along with sophomores Noah Wade and Jack Stuart.

On the defensive side, Surhoff and Morelli will lead a strong group of returners, including sophomore Ethan Metro, juniors Anthony Ferro, John Finnegan, Brennan Twombly, Joseph Pickett and Colin Wanat. Other sophomores back in the mix include Shemmy Bridges, Aidan Hays, as well as first-year Pat Ryan.

St. Lawrence comes back to the gridiron with 17 seniors on the roster, as they aim to improve upon a 3-6 overall record from last season.

The Saints open the season at home this weekend, then will then hit the road for their first Empire 8 crossover series game at St. John Fisher on September 13. The following weekend, SLU will host Alfred University on Laurentian Weekend, playing Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Jumping into conference play, the Saints travel to Union on September 27 for a 5 p.m. game with the Garnet Chargers. SLU then returns home for back-to-back weekends, hosting Hilbert, the new addition to the Liberty League, and Ithaca on October 4 and 11, respectively.

After a bye week, the Scarlet and Brown travel to Hobart on October 25, and then return home to play RPI at Leckonby Stadium on November 1. The following weekend the Saints will wrap up the regular-season road games at Buffalo State on November 8.

St. Lawrence will face the University of Rochester on senior day, November 15, for the regular-season finale.
