Seniors
Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and
Molly Jespersen combined for six wins to headline a strong showing by the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team on the opening day of the Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College.
In the A singles flight, it was the Aksdal-Jansen and Jespersen show as they each reached the semifinals.
In the A singles flight, both seniors advanced to the semifinals with commanding performances. Aksdal-Jansen opened with an 8-3 win over RPI's Kayla Wheeler and followed it up with an 8-5 victory against Rochester's Lily Caldwell. She'll face Nicole Ridenour tomorrow for a spot in the final.
Jespersen mirrored her teammate's success, defeating Ithaca's Sabrina Cheung 8-4 and William Smith's Maya McDaniel 8-5 to reach the semifinals. She'll take on RPI's Gauri Muliyil in her bid for a place in the final.
Sophomore
Elisa Iuri also reached the semifinals in the B draw, earning back-to-back 8-4 wins over Union's Sydney Alphabet and William Smith's Grace Magna. She'll face RPI's Juliette Ceas in tomorrow's semifinal round.
In the D draw,
Alexandra Fuller and
Kate Butler both advanced out of the first round. Butler earned an 8-3 win over Ithaca's Jade Vadeboncoeur before falling in the semifinals to end her run. Fuller cruised to the final with dominant 8-1 wins over Anna Nigro of William Smith and Kyra Terman of Ithaca, but came up just short in the championship match, falling 8-5 to Rochester's Rou Qian Wang.
Aksdal-Jansen and Jespersen continued their winning ways in doubles, teaming up in the A draw to defeat RPI's Kaaviya and Ceas 6-3, then Rochester's Jasmin Toor and Kai Wen Katie Yang 6-2. The duo will face RPI's Taylor Chandler and Kayla Wheeler in tomorrow's semifinal.
The Scarlet and Brown will return to the courts tomorrow for the final day of the Mary Hosking Invitational.
